About Richard Nieman

I’ve always been a people person. By that I mean, I’ve always enjoyed both meeting new people and also meeting those same people’s needs. Whether a client, an internal partner, or a junior mentee, I believe that every business relationship can and should be symbiotic. I work hard to hold up my end of that bargain. In return, time and again, I find I receive back what I’ve contributed and more.During my 20+ years at Wells Fargo, I achieved great success as a revenue generator by cultivating a client base across numerous channels: from farmers, to CEOs, to mid-size companies. These diverse clients had diverse needs, and by listening carefully over weeks and months and years, I was able to consistently deliver and earn their long-term partnership.Likewise, I worked hard to develop the trust of employees on my teams. I always felt that one of my primary responsibilities was to mentor junior employees and support their career growth. It was important to me to convey that such relationships could and should be mutually beneficial: analysts helped generate revenue and I, in turn, would be there to support their advancement. I leveraged relationships with other senior partners and often secured high-profile promotions for my reports. With these principles front of mind – that is, learning and meeting the needs of others – I’ve been privileged to accomplish a great many things. Some of my major accomplishments include: ✓ I led the entire country in sales at Wells Fargo 3 times in 10 years and was the top overall producer from 2005 to 2016.✓ I developed a high revenue-generating base of 200 clients by focusing on products that produce more revenue with less manpower, enabling a 40% headcount reduction in marketers over 10 years.✓ I served as a key liaison for Wells Fargo’s merger with Wachovia by speaking at forums and driving the adoption of new systems. Achievements such as these are not accomplished alone. They were the product of both consultative, long-term partnerships with clients and committed mentorships with those on my teams. As I’ve said, working hard to meet the needs of others often rebounds to one’s own benefit. This has been my experience, and I look forward to continuing to cultivate such relationships in the future.

I invested in this 175-acre almond farm with a partnership comprised of 10 shareholders with the aim of increasing operational efficiency and crop yield. I manage day-to-day operations on behalf of the partnership, drawing on my experience in the agriculture business gained from working with California Central Valley farmers for 20+ years at Wells Fargo. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀:✓ I manage financial operations by developing annual budgets, providing monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting to partners, working with our lender to renew our annual operating line of credit, and collaborating with consultants to secure federal and state grants to upgrade and modernize systems and equipment. ✓ I reduced our costs and carbon footprint while increasing efficiency by converting diesel pumps to modern electric motors. I also upgraded our water management systems to decrease water waste and to further reduce costs. ✓ I secured improved solar credit terms by collaborating with our solar company to gain inclusion in PG&E’s NEM2 program.
  • Wells Fargo
Managing Director - Rates And Fx Solutions
    Wells Fargo Jun 2011 - Nov 2021
    San Francisco Bay Area
I was promoted in recognition of my revenue generation, mentorship results, and contributions to the Wachovia merger. I was the first Managing Director appointed through a new process including a panel evaluation and vote by the Board of Directors. With this promotion, I gained new expanded territory and more sophisticated clients, including the Corporate Real Estate group. I developed marketing activities for fixed-income derivatives and positioned foreign exchange for corporate and commercial customers throughout the Western US. I led a team of ~5 marketers and analysts and was responsible for a $40M budget. 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀:✓ I generated between $10M and $17M each year, leading the entire country in sales during my first full year in this role, through hands-on account planning, solution selling, and client engagement. ✓ I developed a base of 200 high-performing clients by focusing our efforts on debt structuring and extension of credit, products producing more revenue with less manpower. This led to a 40% reduction in marketer headcount in 10 years. ✓ I mentored 10+ junior employees including 5 receiving high-profile promotions, expanding on my long-held reputation as a valuable mentor and coach. ✓ I facilitated the shift to work-from-home by leaning into a remote customer focus, creating new workplace structures, and supporting efforts to train staff on new technologies, leading to record profits in our first year at-home.

I led the entire country in production in my 1st full year in the role. I traveled extensively, building relationships with internal partners and external clients. In 2005, due to my revenue production, I assumed management responsibility for an analyst and was given sole P&L responsibility.𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀:✓ I generated $8.5M in revenue in my first year, leading the entire country in sales despite covering an undesirable territory, through extensive travel and committed relationship building. ✓ I safeguarded the bank against regulatory infractions by alerting senior management to a major derivative compliance issue of which other colleagues were aware and not addressing.
