Director Of NanofabricationBigbangwidth Nov 2001 - Jan 2004CaManaged development team and lead processing efforts allowing for the successful creation of a prototype, bulk-micromachined 8x8 MOEMS optical switch. Supervised remote development efforts working out of the University of Alberta Nanofab facility. Initiated reliability testing of prototype devices, identifying key design constraints limiting optical performance and specified critical path that would allow for delivery of devices with competitive loss specifications. Submitted successful proposal for government funding (MSTRI program) to study MEMS comb drive actuator performance in conjunction with University of Alberta. Working devices were fabricated and tested which resulted in improved algorithms to be used in commercially available MEMS simulation software. -
Senior Process Engineer, High Performance Optical ComponentsNortel Networks Jul 1999 - Sep 2001CaSupervised analysis of material and process issues resulting from scaling of pilot line GaAs HBT fab to volume production. Spearheaded investigated all aspects of emitter contact formation and identified process steps inhibiting Ohmic contact formation. Activities resulted in 50% increase in fab yield.Initiated production in-house accelerated reliability testing used to screen defective products. -
General Manager, Diamond Products DivisionCrystalline Manufacturing Limited Jan 1995 - Jul 1999Managed operations and staff of a venture capital funded start-up company manufacturing CVD diamond substrates, administering budget of up to $3 million/year. Supervised technology development and transition of facility from pilot line phase to premier producer of low cost CVD diamond substrates in the world, as selected by Hughes Space and Communications and Rockwell International. Developed a revolutionary, low-cost process for growing thermal diamond films, as well as state-of-the-art in-house backend capabilities in Nd:YLF laser cutting and CMP/physical polishing of diamond. During a 2 year project funded by DARPA, managed research and development activities leading to 80% reduction in cost of CVD diamond by dramatically increasing production capacity and yield. Member of design team successfully manufacturing and testing electronic packages successfully demonstrating the feasibility and benefit of using diamond as a thermal control material.
