About Richard Jefferson
I am a molecular biologist, social entrepreneur, inventor, open information systems proponent and innovation system strategist. I founded Cambia over 30 years ago, as a means to democratize science-enabled innovation. We work on "Solving the Problem of Problem Solving"™I pioneered Open Science in genetics in the 1980's, and later, the Biological Open Source (BiOS) Initiative, the world's first patent-based commons. 23 years ago, we founded Patent Lens; now its successor The Lens (Lens.org) is the world's largest free, open and secure platform of science and technology knowledge to enable new and different people and institutions to solve critical problems, 'Informed by Evidence, Inspired by Imagination'.We enable Collective Action to address the congruent crises that threaten our society and our ecosystem. This can only happen through connecting actors - globally - both people and institutions. The Lens Collective Action Project builds bridges and removes roadblocks to all innovators. As a scientist, I developed enabling technologies; reporter gene systems (e.g. GUS ), and microbial, plant, biomedical technologies. I did the first field release of a transgenic food crop (1987), and worked extensively in life sciences and agricultural innovation in Asia, Africa & Latin America with the FAO, the CGIAR and the Rockefeller Foundation. My work is guided by the evolution and resilience of complex biological systems, which rely on the diversity and composition of their microbial constituents, a concept I first articulated in 1994 as the 'Hologenome Theory of Evolution'. The implications of Hologenome Theory and its correlated hypotheses, Microbially-Mediated Hormone Modulation, and the Merobiont Hypothesis are many and to me, very helpful in framing points of intervention to make our interaction with the natural world and each other more resilient and respectful. As a fellow of the Schwab Foundation for Social Entrepreneurship, I participate in many World Economic Forum events, including many times as a panelist and speaker at Davos and other meetings of the WEF, and was for four years on the Global Agenda Council for Intellectual Property, and four more on the Global Agenda Council on the Economics of Innovation.Specialties: Social Enterprise, Patent Informatics, Open Science, Climate Change, Open Access, Open Licensing, Innovation Policy, Innovation System Reform, Molecular Biology, Microbiomes, Plant Biotechnology, Agriculture, Global Development, Food Security, Enabling Technology, Complex Biological Systems and the Hologenome.
Listed skills include Molecular Biology, Patents, Science, Life Sciences, and 39 others.

Founder & Ceo
CurrentCambia’s mission is to democratize innovation, creating a more equitable and inclusive capability to solve problems using science and technology. Cambia has a long history of impact in global life science-enabled innovation as inventors and distributors of open access enabling technologies. Cambia has been named in three successive issues to the Global Journal's list of the World's Top 100 NGOs (http://theglobaljournal.net/article/view/534/). Cambia pioneered the development of an open patent-based Commons: the Biological Innovation for Open Society, aka Biological Open Source movement (BiOS www.bios.net), and over two decades ago, started The Patent Lens, at the time, the most prominent free and open full text international patent search site. The successor to Patent Lens, The Lens (Lens.org), is an open, global resource for 'Innovation Cartography': we are building a comprehensive public platform for patent, scholarly knowledge and innovation system transparency and exploring and supporting new modes of collaboration and use of creative and committed intellects.

Professor Of Biologial Innovation
Cambia was partnered with the Queensland University of Technology, where I was a Professor of Biological innovation, with appointments in the Science & Engineering Faculty and the Faculty of Law.
Member, Global Agenda Council On Economics Of Innovation
Member of the Global Agenda Council on the Economics of Innovation, we are responsible for identifying needed changes in the global innovation system and developing strategies for making the system more equitable, efficient and effective.
Member, Global Agenda Council On Intellectual Property
Senior Molecular Biologist
I was the first Molecular Biologist in the UN System, based at the Joint Division of the FAO & IAEA in Vienna.
Postdoctoral Research Associate
In the Molecular Genetics Department of PBI during the years before it was privatised, our team developed and widely distributed under new open source principles, enabling technologies for plant molecular biology (including GUS). We also generated, planted and analysed the world's first field trial of a transgenic food crop.
