While there, I conceived, helped launch and later was named executive editor of a new daily newspaper in the adjacent region of the North Hills. Reviewers from the Newspaper Association of America referred to The News Record as the best newspaper in the country under 50,000 circ. ● At the Courier News, I amplified the talents of a strong editing staff by recruiting superb reporters, copy editors and design talent. I scoured the strongest journalism schools, attended conventions of journalists of color and brought in recruits to interview from across the Northeast. Appointed managing editor after six years as a reporter, city editor and metro editor. During this time WRN launched a morning editor, Today, which was published until the introduction of USA TODAY. The Journal News won multiple awards for excellence from Gannett and the New York press association. While Managing Editor, the Rockland County edition of The Journal News (circ. 50,000) was a finalist for the Robert F. Kennedy award for public service reporting.
