Richard Barham is co-founder and a Director of Acoustic Sensor Networks which was established in 2016. He has specialised in acoustics for over 38 years. He studied Engineering Acoustic and Vibration at the world-famous Institute of Sound and Vibration at Southampton University and had a 30-year career leading research in acoustical metrology at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), before establishing Acoustic Sensor Networks. Richard graduated in 1986 and continued studying for a PhD while working as a research scientist at the National Physical Laboratory, the national measurement institute in the UK. Research topics at NPL covered all aspects of electroacoustics from measurement microphone to ear simulators, and included aspects of training, leadership, representation in international committees and strategy development. Innovation applied to real-world problems is at the forefront of Richard’s approach to research. Current interests include the development of new measurement systems exploiting acoustic micro-sensors based on MEMS technology. Richard’s team at NPL were first to demonstrate that such systems are capable of being used as precision measurement devices, opening possibilities for spatially distributed noise measurement, and creating revolutionary new tools to analyse, understand and ultimately manage noise.Today, the mission at Acoustic Sensor Networks is to seek new commercial opportunities for the MEMS microphone technology, that continue to bring new benefits to society and industry through improved noise management built on pervasive noise measurement.
