Richard's love of film making began as a summer project making Super 8mm movies. He developed skills in special visual effects, film equipment, production, management and budgeting, culminating in a degree in Cinema Arts.Building the equipment for his films led to a job at F&B Ceco, an equipment rental company, maintaining cameras and lenses. This led to working on Close Encounters of the Third Kind under Douglas Trumbal. Alongside John Russell, he helped design and build equipment for CE3K and Show Scan, later working on the camera crew for Night of Dreams, a Show Scan Film.In 1973 Richard helped build one of the largest VFX facilities in the U.S., Universal Hartland, designing, engineering and developing the Motion Control and VFX equipment for the facility, later working as a VFX cameraman on Battlestar Gallactica, Buck Rogers in the 21st Century, Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke, Airport 79 and many other TV shows, commercials and feature films.In 1981 Richard opened Cinema Engineering Co., which designs and builds Motion Control systems and film equipment. In partnership with David Stipes, he opened and operated a successful VFX studio, which provided VFX for features, TV shows, local and national commercials and mini-series, including The Thorn Birds, Ice Pirates, Real Genius, Return of the Living Dead, Tales of the Gold Monkey, Star Crossed, The Twilight Zone, V, V the Final Battle, as well as award winning national commercials for American Airlines, Data Point Computers, Keebler Cookies and more. Richard received an Emmy nomination for his work as Special Visual Effects Supervisor on the mini-series V the Final Battle.Richard currently works as DP, Producer, and VFX Supervisor/Producer. Cinema Engineering Co. continues to operate as well as a new venture, CinemaGear.com. Richard has been working as DP on feature films including The Stone Man and Dismembered, and is currently working as a line producer with 3D Entertainment Company.
