About Prof. Richard Brown
Richard Brown is the Secretary-General of the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC). He has held this office since July 2015 after having held leadership roles in both the European Chiropractors' Union and the British Chiropractic Association. He is also an independent consultant to the chiropractic profession and a chiropractic expert witness.The WFC is a non-governmental organisation that has been a non-state actor in official relations with the World Health Organization since 1997. It has over 90 country members in 7 world regions: Africa, Asia, Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East, Europe, Latin America, North America and Pacific. The four strategic pillars of the WFC's work are support, empowerment, promotion and advancement.As Secretary-General, Richard's role is to represent the WFC as an ambassador, diplomat and spokesperson for the chiropractic profession. He travels extensively, but as the CEO of the organization, he is also responsible for WFC strategy and policy. He leads a team of dedicated and committed staff working from the WFC's headquarters in Toronto, Canada.Richard practised as a chiropractor for 25 years after having graduated from AECC University College in the UK. He is registered with the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) and maintains a busy medicolegal consultancy, providing expert witness services both in the United Kingdom and Ireland. He also runs a dedicated NHS primary care spine clinic at a medical practice in Stroud, Gloucestershire. With a Masters degree in Law from Cardiff University, Richard has a particular interest in ethics and professional standards. He has been a principal author of professional practice documents in the UK, Asia and Africa and has participated extensively in the development of successive editions of the GCC's Code of Practice and Standard of Proficiency. He is an experienced expert witness, working predominantly in the UK and Irish jurisdictions, and has given written and oral testimony in fitness to practise, civil negligence and coronial hearings.Richard believes that relationships based on trust and integrity are the key to success in any organisation. In his role as WFC Secretary-General, he champions evidence-based, people-centred, interprofessional and collaborative approaches to clinical practice. He is also a powerful advocate for high professional standards and believes that excellence in education and research are integral to chiropractic's continued and future success.In 2022, Richard was appointed as an Honorary Visiting Professor at Health Sciences University.
