I joined Equals (formerly known as FairFX) as Head of Engineering at a time when the organisation had made two acquisitions and was in need of technical and structural reform. My responsibilities include:* Leading seven technical delivery teams, made up of 50 engineers across multiple locations* Actively communicating, inspiring and motivating all levels of staff and mentoring future company leaders* Ownership of a technical stack that includes Node.js, React/GraphQL, AWS, C# .NET, Perl* Working closely with department heads, and C-suite leadersSome highlights so far:* Delivered a structured review of existing engineering capabilities and a successful proposal for structural changes and technical replatforming to deliver a higher quality product at far greater speed* Solidified team structures, promoting or hiring a dedicated Team Lead for each of the seven engineering teams, allowing them a high amount of autonomy to take ultimate ownership of quality and delivery* Grew the overall engineering team size from 20 to 50 engineers* Replatforming the three core products from a on-prem monolithic Perl stack to ReactJS micro frontends and Node.js serverless microservices - all products now have hybrid JS/legacy applications in production* Migrated on-prem legacy applications to AWS, automating the previously manual deployment process. * Established frontend and backend guilds and multiple communication touchpoints at all levels to ensure that whilst teams are autonomous they are generally well aligned with each other* Built a dedicated Native Mobile team, and began replatforming two apps from ionic to React Native* Hired a new team to integrate the FIX engine and International Payments product from CityForex, an organisation acquired by the business in 2018* Restructured the traditional ops team and built new DevOps capability to support the migration to AWS and support development teams in rapid delivery

• Managed 20 technical staff in three locations (London, New Orleans and an outsourced team in Ukraine)• Overhauled the organisation’s approach to software delivery from the ground up - introducing Agile Scrum and Kanban process, utilising Jira for issue tracking, and automated deployment and build process using Bamboo and Jenkins• Introduced new methodology for product development - using UI mockups, user grouping and writing user stories for requirements planning• Drove adoption of BDD front end testing using cucumber and Selenium• Oversaw the development of the new online booking and BTC retail tools for salons, with a streamlined UI designed to increase conversion. A/B testing and event tracking implemented using mixpanel• Designed and led full stack development of a simplified administration and onboarding system for the core product (Java, JSF, Spring)• Led a project to implement an unique fully automated marketing tool, that allows salons to keep their appointment books full by marketing to clients, with no human intervention.• Represented the organisation at trade shows

• Recruited new technical staff to take ownership of the all technical platforms• Implemented Agile Scrum development processes, including issue tracking and testing procedures.• Provided technical leadership and attended investment meetings

• Worked with project managers and developers to manage the deployment of new versions of the Shop product to key international clients, including Tesco, Kroger, PAM and Casino• Refined the implementation process, including full automation of deployment thorough use of TeamCity and Nant• Managed a team offshore team members in India in the production of a tool that monitors the health of the company’s 150 development and test environments

Evaluate Technologies developed a mortgage comparison product that was licensed to leading UK price comparison websites including confused.com, whatmortgage.co.uk, fish4.co.uk and Evening Standard.• Recruited and managed 30 staff in the Development, QA and SEO teams, maintaining staff productivity and conducting reviews• Refined the development process, including introducing Agile Scrum processes and rolling out automation of development procedures (Bugzilla, CruiseControl, Nant etc)• Developed the initial version of the Evaluate decision engine, built using C# and Microsoft SQL Server

Utilyx is an energy consultancy that offers management and procurement services to major energy consumers from the industrial, commercial and public sectors. During my five years at Utilyx I worked on the C# platform, progressing from a junior developer to an integral part of the development team working on the company’s core products.
