Much of my legal career — now more than 35 years in length — has been spent dealing with the many tensions that sometimes develop between corporations and the government entities that regulate them. After 18 years in the United States Attorney’s office for the Northern District, the last four of which I spent as U.S. Attorney for that district, I have spent 15 years now in white-collar defense work.I have co-chaired our firmwide Corporate Criminal Investigations practice, have served as head of our Atlanta office's litigation group and currently serve as the partner-in-charge of the Atlanta office.Unlike many corporate defense attorneys, I have the ability to see matters through to the end, even if they conclude in court, because of my extensive experience as a litigator. Having worked at every level of the U.S. Attorney’s Office, I have the advantage of being able to analyze cases for my clients and counsel them specifically on what to expect as a matter continues.I spent four years as a Magistrate Judge in the U.S. District Court and tried a number of corporate civil cases as a judge. I also have broad experience, both as a prosecutor and defense attorney, trying cases in state and federal courts and have extensive experience appearing before the Fifth and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal. I also frequently handle internal investigations for our clients, not only in matters of alleged criminality, but also in issues of corporate integrity and conduct. I have always been able to maintain calm in difficult times, a quality that my clients value when they’re facing a challenging set of circumstances.In my time away from the law, I enjoy watching the accomplishments of my three grown children and my five grandchildren, who range from toddler to teenager.
