“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, you don’t know what you’re doing.” – W. Edwards Deming. But even if you can describe it, does that mean that what you are doing was designed based on Lean principles?I took my first Lean workshop in 1989, fell in love with it, and have stayed with it ever since. I became a full-time Lean consultant in 1994, and have had the great opportunity to work with 100's of the world's best companies as a trainer and mentor. I estimate that I have trained over 10,000 Manufacturing and Industrial Engineers in Lean Design over the last 20 years. Here is some of our recent work at Leonardo Group Americas:The Lean Design Studio. We have hosted our rich collection of training and design tools online and made them available. Learn Work Flow Design and Material Flow Design in depth, and pursue certification. Get access to the Lean Design Simulator. Most importantly, reengineer your Value Streams using our training and roadmaps, with our live coaching.Partnership with Toyota. Toyota has been generous in opening up their facility to us for public workshops on Mixed Model Design. These 3-day events include tours of one of the best factories in North America, and an in-depth exploration of Lean Design. Lean Design Studio members will be able to attend virtual Toyota events.Books from Amazon. My first book, co-authored with Gerard Leone, was "Fundamentals of Flow Manufacturing", publishing in 2002. Since then I have co-authored six other books, including our source book "The Complete Guide to Mixed Model Line Design". Applying Lean to hospitals resulted in the book "Roadmap for the Lean Hospital".Working with Clients. Most of my work over the past 20 years has been on the factory floor, guiding companies in the implementation of Mixed Model Manufacturing. This continues to be an important part of my Lean work, including remote coaching being delivered through the Lean Design Studio platform.

Training And Coaching For Mixed Model Manufacturing | Design Perfect Value StreamsLean Design Studio Llc Feb 2020 - Present➤ Why Mixed Model Manufacturing (MMM)?● MMM is the method for designing production lines and Value Streams that can flow a family of similar but different products with maximum productivity, quality and minimum lead-time. ● MMM is a step-by-step methodology that can be applied for consistent results in any industry. Most Lean Specialists and Material Flow Specialists have not been trained in MMM. ● MMM is foundational, and responsible for 80%+ of the bottom-line benefits of Lean.● MMM eliminates the need for large-scale Kaizen efforts after implementation. ➤ Key Skills to Master: ● Mixed Model Line Design: Design the optimum and balanced work flow for a family of products, including buffer sizing, sequencing rules, operator flexibility.● Mixed Model Material Management: Design a Lean material delivery system, including optimum inventory quantities, pull systems, sequenced delivery, conveyance methods, containerization, workstation design.● Mixed Model Simulation Modeling. Computer modeling is an “electronic wind tunnel” that allows you to test your Value Stream designs prior to physical implementation. Modeling skills are highly important for MMM designers working in situations with high variability and high interdependencies.➤ How it works:● Learn Line Design, Material Management and Lean Simulation online.● Earn formal Certification in these subjects by completing a coached project and exam.● Follow the implementation roadmaps included in the STREAM and LINKED programs.➤ Expected outcomes:● Upgrade skills of Manufacturing Engineers, Material Flow Specialists, Lean Management.● Reduce risk by following a proven roadmap for Workflow and Material Flow design.● Achieve 80%+ of the bottom-line benefits of Lean in 12-16 weeks.➤ What others say:“At Toyota the skills of Lean Industrial Engineering (MMM) are assumed to be in place as a given. That’s why we don’t talk about it as much”. TPS Ambassador, Toyota Material Handling -

Simulation Modeling | Testing Value Stream Designs | Buffers | Sequencing Rules | ResourcesLean Design Simulator Jan 2019 - Present➤ What is the Lean Design Simulator?● We have created a powerful yet low-learning-curve simulation modeling engine that is hosted at the Lean Design Studio.● It is a full discrete-event software tool that is specifically designed to model Value Streams and production lines.● All data inputs and outputs are hosted in Excel worksheets, a tool that everyone already knows.● The Lean Design Simulator includes a 40-page User Guide and a series of training videos to get you up to speed quickly. ➤ Key Skills to Master: ● Learning what data is needed. The good news is that the data requirements map directly to the Mixed Model Manufacturing methodology.● Learn how to set up the data input Excel worksheet. Templates are provided to get you started.● Learn to run the models using the simulator engine. This is very easy...only 3 parameters are required.● Learn how to interpret the simulation results. This is a key piece of the process, and we’ve provided video training on how to do this.➤ How it works:● The Lean Design Simulator assumes that you have already created a Value Stream Map, and have converted that map to a Mixed Model Line Design.● Assuming that your Line Design data is available, build the input Excel workbook using our templates as a starting point.● Upload the data file to the Lean Design Simulation and run the model. This usually only takes a few seconds.● Download the results and analyze the throughput and resource utilization. Make changes to your data input model based on what you learned.● Rinse and repeat this cycle of experimentation and improvement, until you have met your design goals.➤ Expected outcomes:● Spending time with a well-designed model, and conducting a series of experiments to improve the model performance, will certainly improve your Line Design.● The goal is to eliminate the need for any major changes to the design once you bring the Lean Design live in the real world. Kaizen should not be a rework program!
