In overall control of the deployment of the company’s software to AWS and helping design the overall platform’s architecture and technology stack. Key outcomes in this role included setting up the automation of the deployment of the company’s software stack and setting up the management of the Quality Assurance (QA) processes as part of a wider Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) strategy. Major activities included obtaining the company’s accreditation for Cyber Essentials Plus establishing IT policies and procedures to allow for the successful accreditation. Work also included successful consultation efforts, regarding energy efficiency in data centres.

Working on the QuantiCode research project as part of the Leeds Institute of Data Analytics.The focus of the work was enhancing the ACE visual analytics tool, which handles missing data and overlapping set analysis. The work also included extending rfViz a tool for visualisation and analysis of data using the random forest algorithm. Data analytic work included data quality analysis of NHS HES data. Software development in this role included the use of R, Java and Python.

Working on the ASCETiC research project (2013-16) and Tango (2016-2019). The overall aim of ASCETiC was to provide novel methods and tools to optimise energy efficiency and minimise the carbon footprint resulting from designing, developing and running software in Clouds.Tango focused on heterogeneous parallel architectures and low power computing.

This role has involved the teaching on two modules and acting as a guest lecturer on a third. General responsibilities included: Giving lectures and tutorials, Lecture and tutorial preparation, the setting of coursework, exams and marking. The modules that were taught are as follows:Module leader for the taught course "Information Systems and Databases" (COMP2448):The teaching covers topics such as: Conceptual modelling, Databases, ER diagrams, UML, Data warehousing and Data mining. Teaching on the "Networks and Scalable Architectures (COMP2444)" taught course:The teaching covers topics such as: Operating systems, File systems and I/O, Memory management and Virtualization.Guest Lecturing on the "Computer Systems (COMP1440)" course:This was acting as temporary cover for 3 lectures covering aspects of TCP/IP and also of mobile communication systems.

This involved taking an existing eScience application called the "Electronic Laboratory Notebook" and porting it to the cloud. The key outcome of this was to deliver a virtual machine with the software installed for the EUROCHAMP-2 project. This was done as a means of reducing end user software installation effort from 2-3 hours to approximately 5-10 mins. The second major outcome was to refactor the code to assist long term maintenance and expanded usage of the software.

This involved research in the field of Grid computing, which is a form of distributed computing, aimed at both computationally and data intensive work. The work was part of an EPSRC funded project, whose aim was to produce a new type of Grid resource broker, with advanced economically oriented scheduling. The main aim of this was to enforce Quality of Service (QoS) provision in regards to time and cost guarantees. The main research outcome was several publications in the field of brokerage and service level agreements. A full software stack for a Grid that performs negotiation for computational tasks was also developed, which is now utilised in the teaching of WS-Agreement to masters level students.During his PhD Richard also performed a tutoring role for the modules "Modelling, Analysis and Algorithm Design" and "Distributed Systems" and was the convener of the Distributed Systems and Services research group's seminars.

This involved investigating the use of risk as a parameter for deployment decision making within a cloud environment, via a process of discrete event simulation that invoked the risk assessor component of the EU FP7 OPTIMIS project.

This involved assisting the teaching of tutorials for the module "Distributed Systems" in the academic years 2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13 during the first term. It also involved marking coursework in 2009/10 and in 2012/13. The module "Modelling, Analysis and Algorithm Design" was also taught, which involved full tutorial group teaching and marking in the first term of 2010/11. Teaching involved technologies such as JDBC, Web Services, Java and UML.

The work involved the automation of experiments within the laboratory via hardware control, as part of three weeks work within the School of Chemistry. The automation was achieved by writing software in LabVIEW and VBA, via the use of GPIB commands. The experiments involved taking impedance analysis data of materials through a temperature range using a cryostat.This project was important in that it introduced LabVIEW and experimental automation into the research group, while also acting as the template for future development in this area. The automation of the experiments ensured more data could be gathered than would have otherwise been possible, with the additional benefit of freeing up the researcher's time.

This involved the development of their practice management software for law firms. This work primarily focused upon the producing of a standard set of reports that came with the product. The development work that was done as part of this role was in Progress 4GL.
