In July 2015, I transferred along with several hundred colleagues from D. E. Shaw & Co. to a newly-formed spinoff, Arcesium LLC. Arcesium commercializes the middle- and back-office technology developed at D. E. Shaw, providing it via a software-as-a-service model to other financial firms. Here I continue my work in systems engineering, design, security, and software development, with a new emphasis on cloud technologies (since our services are implemented in AWS).

In 2004 I returned to work at D. E. Shaw & Co. L.P., this time in the main New York office, as a senior member of technical staff focusing on Unix, networking, and security.• Networking: internal LAN/WAN design, deployment, and maintenance; OSPF/RIP/BGP/PIM; multicast market-data delivery; WAN and VPN links to other firms• Unix systems engineering and administration: configuration and package management, systems software development, maintenance and troubleshooting• Security: Primary architect and maintainer of firm-wide Kerberos infrastructure, allowing seamless cross-platform authentication among many services on Windows and Unix and comprising infrastructure on both platforms (KDCs etc.). Provided libraries, tools, standards, documentation, and training to systems staff and developers for using Kerberos in their work.

Planned and led a project to upgrade the company’s internal and external mail infrastructure, including single-signon authentication to IMAP and SMTP via Kerberos.

Merrill Lynch acquired the Boston office of D. E. Shaw & Co. (D. E. Shaw Financial Technologies, L.P.), and I accepted a position with ML substantially continuing my role as systems and network administrator, with expanded responsibilities.ML closed this office in December 2002; I spent the next two years doing independent writing and consulting.

My first stint at D. E. Shaw & Co., in their Boston office dedicated to online financial software. Worked primarily in Unix systems administration and software development.

Member of a six-person team performing a DARPA-sponsored project on Internet Routing Infrastructure Security. Studied existing and proposed inter-domain routing protocols for the Internet, identifying security requirements and vulnerabilities, and developing countermeasures to address them. Added the countermeasures to existing implementations of the Nimrod and IDRP routing protocols, and evaluated performance data in a testbed environment.Provided systems engineering and administration support to a group selling public-key infrastructure technology (certificate authority systems).
