About Richard Willis
My professional experience is currently focused on design and development of embedded application frameworks, for application support. The past 10 years have initially been focused on low level RTOS (FreeRTOS), BSP, framework and stack (eg. TCP/IP) programming in C++, C, PIC24 and ARM assembly. Recent work over the past 4 years has shifted to Linux kernel based embedded firmware in which I worked on kernel drivers, Board Support (including Device Trees) and application porting and development with heavy emphasis on application framework architecture design (as the lead/principle architect). Some parts of my recent experience over this past year has delved into Software Defined Radio (SDR) embedded systems, primarily using the CC11xx series transceivers. These SDRS were designed to work as GSM Radio detectors, measuring non-decoded statistical information on these signals for forwarding to additional cloud based processing (filtering, distance estimation and triangulation). Previous to this I was working on embedded frameworks designed to support automotive embedded IoT systems (AVL) used in vehicle location, status and telemetry. Prior work in my career includes robotics, digital (software) signal processing and embedded medical devices which have involved hardware (analog, digital and FPGA) design as well as firmware programming. I am comfortable working at all levels of product design, from the hardware (analog, digital, RF and single-component SoC), through the BSP, OS, Framework (and stacks) and up to the application.Specialties: Embedded firmware design and development, including application frameworks, from 16/32-bit MCUs to more complex 32-bit SoC supporting Linux. IoT telemetry system design.
Listed skills include Embedded Systems, Firmware, Device Drivers, C++, and 44 others.

Role listed
Senior Firmware Engineer
Embedded Systems Team Lead
My role is as Team Lead for the Firmware Engineering Department. Currently working on development of Open Fronthaul compliant equipment for 5G Cellular. As with my previous role, my work involves architectural aspects (requirements & specifications), research, hardware integration (BSPs, FPGA-SW inter-operation) and firmware design. In addition, I am currently heavily involved in: Test lab design and implementation, Software engineering, Devops, CI/CD workflow design/configuration and build system setups.
Firmware Systems Team Lead / R&D Engineering - 4G/5G Cellular Fronthaul
In this role I an the team Lead for the firmware department at Dali Wireless Canada. Lately I have also been assisting in new work in which I am taking the lead position for new Embedded OS and application software development, using a vendor supplied build framework. Part of this work is an assisting role on the FPGA side so I so some IP and System-verilog work as well, primarily on internal data buses (used for PL/PS communications) and communications interfaces such as Ethernet MACs (10/100/1000/10G) and CPRI.The focus of this work is development of cellular fronthaul equipment, designated by Dali as vFI (Virtual Fronthaul Interface) (http://www.daliwireless.com/products/virtual-fronthaul-interface-vfi/).
Embedded Systems Engineering Consultant And Contractor
This is a new business venture to provide consulting and contracting services. My specialization is in the areas of small (RTOS) and medium (Linux) sized IoT, medical and industrial embedded systems with focus on development of the embedded OS and support framework for the end application.Contract Experience - Linux build system consulting (Yocto) for 2 new embedded Linux targets using i.MX 6 SoC based SoM (System on Module) boards. Included consulting advice for several peripherals and for developing an application support layer. - Driver development for Linux audio, integrating and fixing existing partial code to support a new I2S microphone and integrate it as an ALSA device. - Linux Driver development to support the i.MX 6 SNVS system - Linux Device tree development work for several i.MX 6 SoC and external (I2C) peripherals - Linux kernel configuration modifications, both direct and consultation support
Sr. Embedded Firmware Engineer
The focus of my work here has been on passive detection and measurement of Cellular and WiFi transmissions, primarily LTE. An important core part of my role in the company is also as a mentor to several of the junior engineering staff. Projects that I work on include such aspects as: - Cellular modulation and transmission protocols, primarily 4G/LTE at this point. - WiFi on Linux, primarily control via Netlink sockets - WiFi based Mesh (802.11b) - Continued work on FreeRTOS based embedded firmware systems (see prev. job as well) - SDR based embedded radios
Sr. Firmware Engineer / Principle Architect – Rtos And Linux Embedded Devices
Principal architect and lead developer on firmware design for a new ARM Cortex A8 based target running Linux as the OS. This design worked covered initial design decisions on the target Linux Distro and how to design an application layer into a basic file system with reliable performance and a quick, usable, boot time.• Planning for adapting the new target design to run Linux OS and file system. Time was saved by using open source design as a starting point, then modifying that to suit the end use for the device. All initial design was detailed in design documents as part of this effort.• BSP development for the target. OS version required Device Tree based configuration.• Driver modification to suit special needs of the application• Design and coding of a new multi-threaded application framework that was flexible enough to run on several Operating Systems with minimal code change. In fact, this development was maturing at the time the target and OS was decided upon. Initial work was compiled in Win32 then moved to Linux.• Porting of application services to the new target. Time saved by developing the service framework to be very close to the system used on the donor target.• Design and Development of a data IPC (or Inter-thread communication) system to pipeline data through processing services and pass signals and events. • Development of new application services; System Manager, Power Management, Network Management, Modem Management, Host Connection Manager, GPIO services, Geofencing, and more.• Design and Integration work on embedding Lua into a virtual machine wrapper in the application. The scripting support is used by other services, such as Modem manager, for creating flexible control system modules for the application.
Firmware Engineer
Tasked with enhancing existing target firmware and writing new firmware in order to complete the design cycle of the device. System firmware contained within an ARM-Core CPU with FreeRTOS as the local OS.• Support & on-going development of a custom C++ based board support package• Porting existing software to the new RTOS model (see also service framework below)• Enhancement of the existing BSP with features (below) o Flash Filesystem, Bluetooth driver (logical Com ports), FTP Client and Server (supports FFS, Tcl), Accelerometer data processing for driver behavior analysis, Tcl Script support (reading, loading of procedures)o Phone support (analog call control and command based API for external device usage)o Driver level support, new UARTs and tie into existing device driver framework• Upgrade of the existing Version Control system to Subversion• Design of a new service framework used to support ported components. The new framework is a ground up design offering greater control over individual services running on the AVL.
