The Canal & River Trust is one of the country’s newest and largest charitable organisations with a complex multi-disciplinary portfolio of interests and responsibilities, ranging from maintenance of historical infrastructure, real estate, navigation authority, environment stewardship, fundraising and utilities. All with the primary aim of maintaining the 200 year old, 2,000 mile canal network for the benefit of the nation.The primary role as head of GIS is to oversee the delivery and strategic direction of geospatial intelligence across this complex multi-disciplinary organisation, through the provision of systems, processes and management of a nationwide team of highly skilled GI Specialists. To enable the collection, collation and enrichment of data and its subsequent analysis and exploitation for the wider benefit of the Trust, its customers and stakeholders. Empowering them to deliver the Trust’s vision of "living waterways that transform places and enrich lives" in an as efficient and engaging way as possible.

In July 2012 the Canal & River Trust was formed from the English and Welsh components of British Waterways. As part of this process staff were TUPE across to the new charitable trust.During this period I developed and deployed a corporate browser based mapping solution based on ArcGIS Server Flex API, which utilises bespoke web services to administer and configure the application to maximise flexibility whilst minimising the required infrastructure. I was also a core part of the team who worked on the replacement of the two mobile applications and related systems which I had previously developed and implemented in 2007. Both these innovative and highly cost effective applications have underpinned a number of business critical systems that integrated SAP, GIS and mobile working.

The role of GIS Developer for British Waterways was created in May 2006 following the recognition of the increasing need to exploit the potential of GIS and mobile applications.The role's primary responsibility included corporate wide system integration, GIS and mobile applications development. Two of the most significant projects completed within this period were the development, delivery and support of two bespoke mobile GPS enabled applications. Each of which fundamentally changed the organisation, revolutionising business critical processes, delivering transparency and enabling significant improvement to business efficiency.
