Richard Harney is the Tribal Planner for Ketchikan Indian Community, the local tribe in Ketchikan. He has lived in Ketchikan for over 30 years and graduated from Ketchikan High School. Shortly after completing his Urban Planning degree from Arizona State University, Richard returned to Ketchikan to work in the Department of Planning and Community Development for 15 years, finishing as the Planning Director for five years. He holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Alaska Southeast and a professional certificate in Sustainable Tourism Management. He developed a tourism strategy for the community which was adopted in July 2023 and worked extensively on implementing strategies from the community’s housing assessment. Richard is married and has five children, which is why he has dedicated his career to making Ketchikan a livable and vibrant community in Southeast Alaska.
