About Richard Hoang

I have a year of experience building new partnerships between the library and campus partners. Connecting people to library services and experts is my newly-found passion, and I enable people to realize that libraries are a place of learning. I entered librarianship coming from the STEM field. After completing my B.Sc, my experiences in industry and academia have inspired me to pursue graduate studies in Library and Information Science. Information is produced at high rates but is not being utilised efficiently. In particular, I want to connect the STEM field to resources that will enable fascinating discoveries and outcomes. In 2021, I received my Master's degree at the University of Southern California in Library and Information Science. From the many courses, information interviews, and professors, I am in managing information assets and helping translate knowledge in industry and academia to create something novel that benefits our society.

  • Simon Fraser University
    Library Assistant
Simon Fraser University Sep 2016 - Present
    Burnaby, B.C.
I work at the public service desk, circulate library materials, maintain the stacks, and navigate users using the library and website. I love interacting with patrons and digging deeper to identify library services that align with their needs - especially if they are first-time users. I have a robust knowledge set of library services to make warm referrals for library users.

  • Simon Fraser University
    Teaching Assistant
Simon Fraser University Jan 2021 - Aug 2021
    Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
I was a Teaching Assistant in the Department of Chemistry for a 1st-year general chemistry course (Chem 122). These opportunities were remote; I taught multiple tutorial sections and held office hours through the Zoom and Blackboard Collaborate platforms. Being a TA was an engaging role as I helped students build a strong foundation in chemistry knowledge while meeting learning outcomes. I troubleshoot problems in students' experiments and guide my student's understanding of chemistry concepts they may need help understanding. This is a rewarding learning experience as I engage with my students and gain teaching experience. Knowing that my students come from different backgrounds and have different experiences, I also created a safe learning environment and earned the trust of my students by referring my students to institutional resources inside and outside the classroom.
  • Bancroft Library
    Student Librarian, Oral History Center
    Bancroft Library May 2021 - Jul 2021
    Berkeley, California, United States
This was an internship-for-credit where I supported metadata for oral history in two projects: Rosie the Riveter World War II American Home Front and the AIDS Epidemic in San Francisco. I supported in having these resources become searchable and discoverable on the library catalogue through Oral History Metadata Synchronizer (OHMS). I came up with a quantitative method of deriving descriptive keywords using intermediate features of a spreadsheet software.

This is a rewarding learning experience as I get to engage with my students in addition to gaining teaching experience.
  • Simon Fraser University
    Undergraduate Student Researcher (Warren Lab)
Simon Fraser University Jan 2017 - Aug 2018
    Burnaby, B.C.
For my undergraduate research project, I was given the pleasure by Dr. Jeffrey Warren of synthesising original and unique porphyrins. I formulated different solvent systems to purified these products by using column chromatography. These compounds were observed for its uniqueness of having electro-catalytic activity.
  • Stemcell Technologies
Particles Chemistry Co-Op Student | Analytical Team
    Stemcell Technologies Sep 2017 - Apr 2018
    Vancouver, Canada Area
I worked at Stemcell Technologies in the Particles Chemistry Department. In-house particles are used for magnetic separation of cells in blood. This experience furthered my understanding of particle size distribution (PSD). I was involved in in the characterisation of in-house particles. This included obtaining PSD's using various equipment, Total Organic Carbon quantification for coating of particles, zeta potential for surface charge, and various quantitative chemical assays. I also had the opportunity to develop an assay for protein quantification in the particles. This was one of the few in-house assays was able to correlate if particles were functional as confirmed by the Functional Testing Team.
  • Simon Fraser University
    Research Volunteer (Sun Lab)
Simon Fraser University May 2016 - Aug 2016
    Burnaby, Bc
I am a volunteer at the Sun Lab (Dr. Bingyun Sun) under the Department of Chemistry. This opportunity involves culturing mammalian stem cells by observing its proliferating behaviour in presence of a certain sugar. We are also interested in looking into the proteins that are associated with it through Mass Spectroscopy.

  • Afcc Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Corp.
    Co-Op Student
Afcc Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation Corp. Sep 2014 - Apr 2015
    Burnaby, Bc
Working at AFCC was a true pleasure. I had the chance to get involved with the heart of the fuel cell, the Catalyst Coated Membrane, where the majority of electrochemical reactions occur. For this position, I am involved in product design, production scale-up, and quality control such as measuring viscous properties and particle size. Data management is another important portion of this position where I also learned Visual Basic to create macros assisting in data analysis.
