I have had extensive experience working in a large multi-program human services agency as director of research, training and psychological services and have served as the principal investigator for two SAMHSA-funded NCTSN community practice site grants. My clinical experience working with children in child welfare programs inspired me to develop trauma and resilience-focused treatment tools that could engage hard-to-reach families, reduce traumatic stress symptoms, and increase resilience with children and families struggling with complex trauma. I developed Real Life Heroes, an evidence-supported treatment program for children and families with traumatic stress that has been field-tested in child and family services with children referred for high risk behaviors. Two studies demonstrated significant reductions in behavioral problems and trauma symptoms with children who experienced multiple types of traumas and had symptoms of complex trauma. I am also the author and co-author of twelve books about child and family services and have published 35+ articles, chapters, and papers on practice and research issues in trauma therapy, child welfare, foster care, adoption, professional development, program evaluation, and quality improvement in family service agencies. My work includes development, pilot testing, evaluation, and dissemination of evidence-supported practices for Complex PTSD. I have also been privileged to work collaboratively with the NCTSN to develop products for improving services to children, including leadership roles on Network committees and workgroups including the NCTSN Steering Committee and the NCTSN Child Welfare and Complex Trauma Committees. As part of this work, I initiated and co-chaired the NCTSN Resource Parent Workgroup, leading to development of the Resource Parent Curriculum: Caring for Children who Experienced Trauma which has been used around the world. My latest books include The Hero's Mask (Routledge, 2020) and The Hero's Mask Guidebook: Helping Children with Traumatic Stress (Routledge, 2020).
