Securing the right distribution network can be a challenge, and Kelloggs engaged us to model their current Australian distribution network – and identify alternative location options for their national distribution centre. The project included modelling a range of centralised and decentralised network scenarios, benchmarking 3PL warehousing and freight costs and recommending a preferred network option. We helped to implement more efficient processes, resulting in a 10 percent saving on Kelloggs’ existing operational network costs.

Bunnings hired us to model its inbound supply chain, which was a multi-level brief. We were tasked with identifying potential efficiency improvements for store replenishment with its existing Core Carrier program, optimising the receiving operations and reduce vehicle congestion, and developing an optimal replenishment network to support Bunnings’ overall business strategy. We had a number of successful outcomes including developing a regional cross-dock strategy, which resulted in cost savings of 12 percent.

We’ve worked with a range of specialty retailers and this project, for the SuperAmart and Barbeques Galore team, was particularly interesting. We were hired to consult on distribution centre consolidation in both NSW and VIC, and successful outcomes included a 50 percent increase in capacity utilisation with a corresponding footprint reduction of 40 percent, thanks to an introduction of high-density furniture storage and handling solutions. The client also enjoyed a significant per annum saving on operating costs.

This leading Italian multi-national dairy and food corporation required our consulting services for a cool room facility consolidation feasibility study. The successful outcomes achieved included increased capacity utilisation in the main cool room and consolidating soft dairy products into the facility. We also identified significant operating cost savings which enabled the client to invest in new materials handling solutions.

Unilever’s multi-layered brief to our team included freight tenders, a distribution network review, a primary freight strategic review and a 3PL vendor contract preparation and negotiation. As part of our project deliverables, we successfully identified a reduction of over 10 percent on existing network operating costs, restructured primary freight agreements and negotiated performance-based carrier agreements.

3M tasked us with leading a project team to evaluate the feasibility of outsourcing logistics at its national distribution centre. To do this, we evaluated existing warehousing operations in FMCG, pharmaceutical and dangerous goods product ranges. We also worked on a follow-up project to design, project-manage and implement a new distribution centre incorporating best practice technologies.

Proton was planning to relocate to a new automotive plant and required us to lead a project team to develop a logistics concept and plan, and a design for the new plant. We prepared a concept design and business case for a new inbound consolidation centre, designed an inbound ‘milk run’ parts collection system and costs – and managed a 3PL supplier pre-qualification.

The brief from this leading home appliance manufacturer was clear: project manage a national distribution review and identify cost reduction opportunities in excess of 20 percent. We later implemented a dedicated ‘milk run’ distribution model for national metropolitan and regional customer deliveries. This project included negotiating transport contracts, introducing incentive-based rate cards, specifying fleet requirements and preparing and negotiating contracts.

After 13 years working in high level roles within logistics and supply chain at companies such as Linfox & DTM Business Logistics, I decided to become a supply chain consultant so I could work across a range of different clients and make an impact across many rather than just a few.I was awarded a position with Symonds Henderson (later acquired by Sinclair Knight Merz), as their Principal Consultant.Sinclair Knight Merz is a specialist consultancy focused on the provision of advice to companies to help them improve customer service operations and develop cost-effective solutions for supply chain, warehouse, material handling and distribution issues.During my time I was responsible for successfully managing 40+ consulting projects, where my role was to oversee joint teams of client and consulting staff to achieve client and project objectives. Once the company was acquired by Sinclair Knight Merz they went through a restructure and this is when I decided to go out on my own to apply my own unique methods and strategies onto companies I worked with by launching New World Business Solutions.
