Dr. Lu is a Research Scientist in the Department of Pharmacy Practice at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (UB SPPS). Within the collaborative framework of the New York State Department of Health (NYS DoH), Office of Health Insurance Programs (OHIP), and the Center for Health Outcomes, Pharmacoinformatics, and Epidemiology (cHOPE) at UB SPPS, Dr. Lu has has been dedicated to conducting retrospective drug utilization review (DUR) using Medicaid claim data. Retrospective drug utilization review (DUR) program at UB SPPS is an ongoing initiative that use predetermined criteria to interpret patterns of drug use and minimize inappropriate prescribing. This program reviews drug therapy after the patient has received the medication, with the goal of detecting patterns in prescribing, dispensing, or administering drugs. The results of a retrospective DUR review could be used to develop prospective standards and target interventions to prevent recurrence of inappropriate medication use or abuse. Additionally, the results of a retrospective DUR review can help prescribers improve the care of their patients, either individually or within a specific target population. His commitment to this endeavor underscores his passion for optimizing drug therapy for New York State Medicaid members.Dr. Lu's current research interest is in using machine learning and deep learning algorithms to develop predictive models that can be used to improve the health outcomes of diverse patient populations. His ultimate goal is to validate the performance of these models in different settings and seamlessly integrate them into the existing workflows of healthcare providers. Dr. Lu is particularly interested in using machine learning to predict adverse drug events, identify patients who are at risk for chronic diseases, and optimize medication regimens. He believes that machine learning has the potential to revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered and improve the lives of patients around the world.
