I have a long and successful track record managing technology, and the people who manage technology. I have strong experience in Internet hosting and services, including architecture, engineering, implementing, and supporting services which exceed billions of daily queries.I have been practicing the habits that are now summarized as DevOps for nearly twenty years. I have always had a strong passion for automation, as one of my system administrator mentors told me early in my career: "Your job is to put yourself out of work." I have worked with Chef, Puppet, and Ansible extensively, and developed a wide range of tools to support scaling systems. I am fluent in Python, Go Lang, and Shell and comfortable with PHP, Ruby and Perl. My knowledge in automation extends beyond the basic tool sets into writing custom modules, implementing CM tooling as part of a CI/CD pipeline, and using services such at Etcd and Consul to manage service catalogs and support automated configuration, discovery, scaling, and health remediation.I've embraced the idea of working with containers since early in my career, deploying some services using Solaris Zones in their infancy. In 2012 I wrote initial tooling for a proof of concept trying to migrate infrastructure control infrastructure into OpenVZ containers. I was happy that Docker came along shortly after and provided a robust container solution!I have also written several complex python applications using Flask, Unicorn, and the Twisted Framework in order to keep an environment with tens of thousands of servers free from unexpected change and to apply business rules to keep resources clean. In addition to my technical depth, I have excellent leadership skills, having managed and led several successful teams (with measurable metrics demonstrating the teams as highly engaged and successful such as NPS, Gallup Q12, and KPI's important to the business).

(Senior) Linux System Engineer IvRackspace Hosting Nov 2010 - Apr 2014San Antonio, Texas, UsAs a Linux System Engineer III at Rackspace I have had the opportunity to work on three great products:Cloud Servers (both our original servers product, and OpenStack powered product)Cloud Control Panel (mycloud.rackspace.com)Cloud Load Balancers (only systems engineer working on this product, saw it through from an early development effort to successful product launch. The API and systems being rock solid, 100% automation coverage, and single action deployment at the time of launch). My responsibilities for the products include systems engineering and devops work. I have been responsible for launching the Load Balancer and Control Panel products, ensuring business requirements are met when deploying to both bare metal and into the public cloud. I have been responsible for automation with both Chef and Puppet (Chef used for our cloud deployed applications, Puppet used for our applications sitting on bare metal). I have written and developed custom tools in both Python and Ruby. The tools have ranged from simple scripts to help control load balancers by our operations/systems administration teams, to complex web applications using Flask and Twisted with RabbitMQ/Mongo to have a solution for auditing and providing file integrity across our entire fleet of cloud servers hosts (hypervisors). I have been responsible for systems planning, architecture, and a complete focus on automation. Most recently on our cloud servers product I have done a massive overhaul of our puppet automation system, allowing for modules/manifests to be updated automatically in different environments (dev/qa/staging/production) with single commits to git. The automation coverage has increased massively, and the process simplified. -
