This past spring semester, he took a graduate course that I teach – EAS590: Case Studies in Engineering Management and earned an “A.” The primary goal of this course is to promote the understanding of an engineer's role as an engineering manager. Engineering management functions and associated skills and knowledge are emphasized and issues and problems are discussed. It is intended to give students an opportunity to integrate the knowledge they acquire by actively using it to solve real-world problems. The course is comprised of six case studies; this spring they included: organizational development, strategic planning and marketing, core competencies, continuous improvement, supply chain management, and R & D. Persons from industry present their areas of engineering management expertise and share critical issues and concepts within their fields. At the end of each presentation, a case is given. Solutions require individuals to work in a team. Richard worked well with the members of his group and was personally well prepared for all classes and actively participated in discussions. He demonstrated a high level of motivation throughout the course and his assignments were both well conceived, well researched and completed in a timely fashion. Throughout the term, he expressed himself well in both oral and written communications. I also had the pleasure of having Richard in a capstone undergraduate course called IE496: Industrial Engineering Internship. The course is in two parts – an internship at an area company where the student works on a company project and a lecture portion where information is transmitted and assignments are graded. Richard received an “A” for each part. His intern project on inventory at Piezotronics was well received by the company and back at the academic department. In summary, it is my opinion that Richard is a fine young professional who will make valuable contributions in all endeavors that he participates in. I highly recommend him to you.
