Richard Baker is a Reservoir Engineer with over 37 years of practical experience in reservoir engineering, simulation, EOR and thermal projects. His work along with other members contribution’s has resulted in production increase of 150 Mstbo/d and added 100’s MMbbl reserves. He has worked on a number of reservoir characterization / reservoir simulation projects worldwide in Canada, Russia, Indonesia, South America, North Africa, Middle East, North Sea and North America. Richard has held senior reservoir engineering positions at both Shell and Husky Oil, and holds both 2 Bachelor’s degrees and a Masters degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Calgary. He was a president of a small company (Yellowbrick; 2006-2009) The company was successful from an economic and technical point of view. He has written a book called “Practical Reservoir Engineering and Characterization” (Elsevier 2015)Richard is a Distinguished Author Member of the Petroleum Society of CIM and received an SPE award in 2007 and a CIM service award in 2008. Twice won SPE Reservoir Characterization award for Canada and nominated for World Reservoir Characterization award. Won 2018 SPE Mentoring Award for Canada. For the past several years Richard has taught courses in Waterflood Surveillance and Reservoir Simulation and Characterization publicly as well as several in-house courses to several oil and gas companies worldwide. In addition to authoring and co-authoring 60+ technical papers, he is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary and sits on the Faculty of Engineering Advisory Board. He helped development the 4th year Design Capstone courses for the University of Calgary.His experience includes waterflood, miscible flood, reservoir characterization projects, as well as EOR predictions, economics, cost estimations and performance analysis of waterflood. He has analysed and supervised hundreds of reservoir studies which have well over 6Bbbl of total conventional reserves and over 15 Bbbl of oil in place and with dozens of optimization teams.. Richard was invited to work with The Department of Energy, Texas, USA and Pioneer on the Spraberry field which continued for 10 years. He has worked on conventional and heavy oil properties that range from single well pools to pools with more than 1000 wells. He has taught reservoir characterization and simulation both in Canada and internationally, and specializes in naturally fractured reservoirs, low permeability reservoir characterization, thermal/chemical EOR and reservoir simulation.
