After graduating West Point, I served as a military officer until retiring from the military in 1996. During that time I qualified as an Army Ranger, commanded an air defense artillery battery in the U.S. and Europe, graduated with a masters degree in nuclear physics from the Naval Post Graduate School, graduated from the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Virginia, and served as the battalion executive officer of a Patriot Missile battalion in Germany and Saudi Arabia.

Worked as a Military Research Associate in a laser physics laboratory at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This assignment was based upon my masters thesis working with scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory on computer simulation of nuclear particle interactions. Programmed in C, LabView, and FORTRAN to develop simulation software to add support for modeling Cerenkov Radiation to the TIGER series of Nuclear Transport Codes.
