Work on the company's flagship product, Mathletics, and content creation tools for it, both in React. Product enhancement for Meritopia, an interactive game used to encourage engagement with the main product (in Typescript).Both of the above involved extensive work to re-engineer the product to support languages other than English; these are now being marketed extensively in Latin America.Prior to this, I helped re-engineer the previous version of the Mathletics content creation tooling, and the content itself, to support non-English languages, specifically Arabic (for Saudi Aramco and the Saudi Ministry of Education) and Chinese. This work was mainly in Ruby.

The rigid profile editor doesn't readily accommodate things like time away with the family, sabbatical, study, and volunteer work. About time it did! I certainly was busy during this time :-)

The bulk of my time at Attache was spent developing Attaché’s “Next Generation” (NG) business software, best described as a rapid application development platform. NG application data is held in a CTree database wrapped in smart folder manager, which responds to JSON messages to operate on the data. My parts in the NG project were specifying and creating the messages and the handlers for those messages. The messages could be sent to the application by a web application, another SMTP-enabled application, or even a basic email client. I also developed web applications to act as user interfaces for NG applications, and a “Software Supermarket” application, from which end-users could acquire JSON messages and handlers for use in their applications. My role also included creating test applications for NG, e.g. one such application which has been running 24/7/365 for about two years, monitoring servers for Attache’s “Alex” document delivery service.NG’s original implementation was as a desktop application using Microsoft VBA to process XML messages; later implementations switched to a web model, using AJAX to process JSON messages, and using JavaScript on both the client and server sides. I also performed extensive rehabilitation and development work for Attache’s corporate members web site, using HTML/XHTML, JavaScript, VBScript, and ASP. The site features a running greenhouse gas emission savings calculator, estimating the amount of CO2 saved by using electronic document delivery instead of using paper.

I joined Advance Bank in 1995; it was later merged with St George Bank / Bank SA, which itself has recently merged Westpac Banking Corporation.I worked on Advance Bank's Loan Planner product, which was a desktop mortgage simulator used as a sales tool. I performed extensive work stabilising the product and improving its performance, and adding new features requested by users.

The Bowman project was a system for optimise battlefield HF (high frequency) radio networks, for reliable communications in the field, with minimal interference.My part of this project was developing a Graphical User Interface using a combination of Visual BASIC and low-level interfacing to Windows NT using Visual C++.I also performed software fault diagnosis and repair for other parts of the Bowman system.I was also in charge of software configuration management, using Intersolve PVCS.

I returned to Scitec for a short contract to assist with the development (in C) of the Fastlane product, a frame relay successor to Maxima.I implemented configuration software for Fastlane's voice and fax interface cards, as well as SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) on the system.

Redeveloped Westpac's DeskBank product; this was a PC application corporate customers used to download various reports and accounting data from Westpac's mainframes. Also improved DeskBANK communications subsystem for better flexibility with different modems.Enhanced Westpac's Electronic Funds Transfer and Account Splitting and Reconciliation products. These products handled an average throughput of about $1 billion per day.These were completed on schedule, and at the time were saving Westpac's Electronic Business Services (EBS) division approximated $2 million per year over the original system.Also provided on-line customer support for EBS.I took voluntary redundancy when Westpac restructured its operation in the wake of the CS90 debacle (with which, I hasten to add, I had no involvement!)

I was part of a team that ported Scitec's "Maxima" data communications software from a 16-bit Perkin-Elmer development system to a 32-bit Apollo Domain system.My part of the work involved porting 30,000 lines of C code over about three months, including portability and maintainability improvements.

Developed and enhanced IBM 4224 IPDS printer emulation software for use with the company's laser printer products.The company got into difficulties in mid 1998, and was later taken over by Gestetner.

Assisted the Nixdorf team, which was adapting Quadtratron's "Q-1" word processing software for the German market. The product, marketed under the name "Top Edit" had been suffering reliability improvements, and I resolve many of the issues with it.(This was a temporary position, while I waited for my visa to migrate to Australia)

CPT Ireland, was a subsidiary of CPT in Minneapolis in the USA.I was part of a team that developed a PC-compatible laptop computer with bundled applications software (database, spreadsheet, smart phone, time management, calculator, and data communications.)My contribution was main in the data communications software, including a VT-220 terminal emulator.

MAC is (or was) a contract R&D company that sells product development services to small companies who don't their own product development capacity, and to larger companies in need of extra development capacity.I had to be something of a chameleon in this job, becoming an expert (or near to it) in whatever skills were required by the client. Some of the products I helped develop:- Automated computer power supply tester / fault analyser- EFTPOS demonstration system- Electronic diary software for the Apple II computer- Automatic centrifuge controller for refining industrial diamonds- Animal activity data logger for feed/energy usage/weight gain analysis- Materials calculator and optimisation software to minimise waste when designing pre-fabricated timber frame houses - Credit Union customer management and transaction software- Industrial data acquisition and logging network

My second period of Co-operative Education was with Hewlett-Packard's Telecommunications Test Division, at South Queensferry in Scotland.There, I worked on optimising software for the HP37461A, the Data Storage and Display module for HP3746A Selective Level Measurement set.

As a student, I earned some handy money giving Computer Science tutorials to fellow students, and providing programming assistance for those learning BASIC, FORTRAN, and COBOL.

During my first period of Co-operative Education (part of my course at NIHE - now University of Limerick), I worked on a GenRad GR1795 automatic circuit tester, performing schematic capture and writing PCB test software.
