Elected to the Hawaii State legislature in 1986; elected to a second term in 1990; served two four-year terms ending November 8 of ‘94. Served for six years as the Minority Floor Leader (working with senators from both parties to achieve consensus, communicate differences, etc.). Rated “best legislator” in the Senate by the Hawaii Small Business Association eight consecutive years.

Served as chief aide to the Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney, Charles Marsland. Duties included analysis, writing and counsel. Served as the Prosecutor’s spokesperson and communications director. Acted as liaison between Prosecutor and 150 deputy prosecuting attorneys, as well as support staff. Wrote news releases, brochures, speeches, and more. Created, publicized and managed an island-wide anti-crime program for Oahu schools.

In May of ‘78, started a bi-weekly newspaper on Maui in Hawaii with statewide distribution. The popular, community-based newspaper was devoted to encouraging good government, small business and heightened environmental consciousness. Duties included reporting, writing, editing, managing advertising sales, photography, art/layout direction

Clients included Seattle Center (coined the name “Bumbershoot” and handled publicity for the now popular arts festival at the Center), Airborne Freight Corporation, Aero Go Inc., Keep Washington Green, and others. Duties included account management, writing news releases, speeches, advertisements (print, radio and television), and presentations.
