The focus of my professional life is to merge outstanding software code with rigorous business logic. I’m a coder who thinks he understands business, masquerading as a serial entrepreneur.At voxgig, my team and I are wrestling with a widespread, deep-seated problem: how to make event management workflows streamlined, centralized and integrated.In my work over the last few years, I noticed that event planners used a plethora of different tools: email, spreadsheets, phone, text messages, post-its, you name it. It didn’t seem smooth or integrated. Pulling off a successful event seemed to be a long, stressful series of time-consuming micro-tasks.As I started speaking at more and more international conferences, I experienced the pain of events from another perspective. Keeping up with what conferences were coming up, preparing CFPs, submitting CFPs, tracking expenses, not to mention travel and accommodation arrangements… there had to be an easier way.In September 2017, I founded voxgig, an event software startup. My team and I have been creating a new social network for the events sector. Our products include a weekly newsletter for tech speakers (now with over 1,000 subscribers), an integrated event management system, and training courses for people who want to develop or improve their public speaking skills.Alongside voxgig, I write a weekly newspaper column, ‘Startup Diary’, which comes out on Thursdays in the Irish Independent.My new book, 'The Tao of Microservices’, has just been published by Manning. My first book, 'Mobile Application Development in the Cloud', was published by Wiley in 2011.Previously, I co-founded nearForm. There, my aim as CTO and CEO was to help build a team of technology professionals who, like me, wouldn’t be happy with the deliver-first, patch-later approach. Today, nearForm is one of the world’s leading providers of large-scale Node.js and microservices solutions for enterprises.
