I like to think and I like to learn. This has most obviously manifested in my job as a chemist. In my career as a residue chemist, I have thoroughly enjoyed every instance of being given a problem to solve, usually in the form of method development or trouble shooting, which both makes use of the knowledge that I have and brings me to seeing new insights. Of course, learning often takes collaborative effort. I not only try to absorb the knowledge other people are willing to share, but also help others learn the things they need to be successful. Being told “When you move on to that other project, I’m still coming to you with questions,” is a nice reward in its own way. I also try to learn about not just my role but how what I do impacts my coworkers in other departments and the grander scheme of things in the industry as whole. This is the kind of knowledge that helps me prevent things that will hold up a project even after it has left my immediate responsibility. It also helps to keep the perspective that what I do is not just extracting a chemical compound from a plant material, it is playing a role in helping to address the world hunger issue. Not a bad reason to get out bed in the morning.When I'm not at work, I'm usually gaming, reading, watching educational videos, or playing music.
