Executive Vice ChancellorThe University Of New Mexico Health Sciences Center 2012 - PresentAlbuquerque, New Mexico, UsJoining UNM in 1996, I have held the role of Executive Vice Chancellor at its Health Sciences Center since 2012. I have also served as Vice Chancellor for Research since 2009. The only academic health center in the state, UNM HSC had 37,996 patient admissions in 2017. I have been proud to contribute to its remarkable growth, impact, and success. As second-highest administrator in the Health Sciences Center, I report directly to the Chancellor. Some of the most significant highlights of my tenure:PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: I co-led all stages of product development, commercialization, and ~$20M funding for a novel diagnostic nanoparticle that surpassed current MRI technology with superior sensitivity.COALITION-BUILDING: I led a 2012 campaign to form the New Mexico Workforce Committee, a partnership of hospitals, professional societies, academic institutions, and licensing boards charged with analyzing healthcare workforce and advising legislature. New Mexico now has the most complete data on healthcare workforce in America.STRATEGIC PLANNING: I have been instrumental in developing an integrated strategic plan for the UNM Health Sciences Center and its clinical, research and educational units. Notably, I led HSC's research mission growth from $85M funding in 2004 to its current 900+ initiatives with $200M extramural funding. In that time, I led reorganization around six signature programs and creation of 6 new education programs. In 2011, I leveraged UNM’s size and prestige to create the Mountain West Research Consortium, a partnership of 13 universities in 7 states.During my time at UNM HSC, I’ve also held academic posts including Assistant Professor (1996 – 2002), Associate Professor (2002 – 2006), and Professor, Pathology (2006 to Present). I’ve maintained a consistent record of academic output including authoring or contributing to 120+ peer-reviewed articles and editing three bioscience texts. Over that period I have received 60+ extramural research grants. -

Board Of DirectorsTricore Reference Laboratories 2002 - PresentAlbuquerque, Nm, UsNew Mexico’s lack of a clinical reference laboratory increased costs for hospitals and threatened physician practices in particular. As part of a coalition of eight state clinical leaders, I was part of a team that formed a joint venture between the UNM Pathology Group, the state’s three largest hospitals, and its largest private pathology group. Since its 1999 opening, TriCore’s lab operations have grown from $25M and 390 employees to $180M and 1,300. I led clinical lab operations for the organization’s first five years and have been a member of the Board since 2002, including three terms as Board Chair, one of them current. Collaborating to help TriCore thrive has been the major demonstration of a joint venture between the two largest health care organizations in New Mexico- UNM and Presbyterian Hospital that has led to lower cost, higher quality care while promoting the practice of pathology. -
