About Richard Still

I am a permanent resident of the Netherlands (US citizen). Between the ages of 5 and 18, I attended 54 schools (the most unbelievable but true factoid about me). I have a Bachelor's degree in Electronic engineering, but have designed exactly 0 circuits since getting that degree. I was a DJ on the radio for a while, worked at Prodigy Online just before the internet happened, worked at a major US bank in tech support, competed in poetry at the national level (twice). I designed a board game. I make a mean veggie lasagna. I started programming for fun in 1996 and for profit in 1998 and have been doing that ever since. I have built three really big systems (the full stack of two psychometric testing platforms and the backend and dev-op of an asset management system for public lighting) and so many little ones I have lost count. My job is to ask the right questions:Is this the right thing to do? How much time/resources will it take? Will it help the organization accomplish its goal? How will the customer like the change? Who needs to know the change is happening? What happens if it fails? How will we know if it succeeds?I want to work in an organization that is making the world a better place, where I believe in the product/service. Expert competencies: Perl, Debian Linux, MariaDB/MySQLMid-level: API integrations (SOAP and REST), SVGBeginner: Javascript, Laravel

  • Nobralux
    Software Developer
    Nobralux Jul 2016 - Present
    Schijndel, The Netherlands
Nobralux is a company with depth of expertise in public lighting. They work with and advise public sector partners on everything from design questions to maintenance to tracking energy usage. They have a home grown software system (LiteWeb) to help them with these administrative tasks. I have been asked to come in and refactor LiteWeb and get it ready for the future in Dynamic Lighting and extra services that can be delivered from a mast.Think about it, with increasing availability and need for electric vehicles and the internet of everything, the ability to dynamically communicate with light masts and everything you might want to hang on a light mast in the future will be essential. LiteWeb will do that and it will do it in a vendor-neutral way that will help city governments from being locked in to single-source solution providers.I am responsible for the server, the database, and all of the backend code. I work with another programmer responsible for the front end. If it happens in the DOM, it's his responsibility, everything else is mine :)Nobralux is awesome, great culture, great colleagues, and challenging work.

  • Learnworks B.V.
    Programmer, Designer
    Learnworks B.V. Jan 2002 - Oct 2022
    Berlicum, Netherlands
Another psychometric test system, but built around a completely different model (Hartman). And another simplified system for coaching artists. And another simplified system for use in education (teacher ratings). And another simplified system for early detection of stagnation in the workplace. And another system for Dialogical Self coaching. The Hartman Value Profile is an intriguing instrument. Traditional psychological tests measure you in comparison with others (ie: Are you more or less dominant than others?) The HVP does something entirely different, it looks at your ability to see and react to situations correctly. There is no comparison with other people, the assumption is that you either see and react correctly, or not.Learnworks has taken the original work of Hartman (self and world) and expanded it to look into other areas of your professional life ( career, work, and culture ). It provides a rock-solid diagnostic tool for identifying employees at risk from stagnation and burn-out. It also provides some key insights into how a candidate views and reacts to the world, profound topics indeed! Though the test itself is simple to fill in, the interpretation of the results is complex and requires quite a lot of insight and training. Learnworks has been working for the last 8 years to turn this complexity into a straightforward diagnostic tool that can be used by psychologists in a wide range of HR situations.I enjoy this work because it is technically challenging and because I have had a chance to be involved in the development of something that, I feel, is vitally important.
  • Online Talent Manager
    System Architect - Market Development
Online Talent Manager Jan 2002 - Apr 2018
    Breda, Netherlands
Design/Build/Maintain complete, multi-lingual, psychometric test publishing platform. Complex processes (statistical analysis, psychometric testing) were simplified and made user friendly. LAMP system with SOAP and REST API. All English language marketing, training, articles, papers, documentation, videos, and translation. Admin and technical support. Why do you work? How do you work? Where do you work and what kind of place do you want to work? How do you communicate with others? What kind of personality do you have? How smart are you and what kind of intelligence do you have? How strong an entrepreneur are you? These and many more questions can be answered by the use of psychometric tests. Online Talent Manager is the developer and distributor of over 50 unique tests in Dutch and English. The system, originally developed for psychologists working in selection assessment or coaching situations, has grown over the years to support a wide range of HR tasks: recruitment, group training, organisational development, etc.I enjoyed working here because I had quite a lot of autonomy, my creativity was constantly used (I also worked with the marketing department), the work was technically challenging, and these instruments can have a profound impact on helping people find the right job/career to fit who they are. I recently read a study from the USA that said that over 50% of people do not like their job. 50%!? That's just depressing, because it doesn't have to be like this, it *can* be better and I hope that OTM can be a significant player in helping people find work that is fulfilling and enjoyable.
  • 2Organize
    Programmer
    2Organize Mar 2002 - Jul 2002
Programming, mostly on backend modules. I would like to say more, because the work environment was lovely and supportive, but my tenure was far too short. I had to leave because this was my THIRD simultaneous job in this time period, which was a little too ambitious on my part.I chose to leave 2Organize because its offices were in Rotterdam, a long commute for me, but that was the only reason. I still keep in touch with some of the excellent people I met there.
  • Journalistic, Inc.
    Programmer
    Journalistic, Inc. Aug 1999 - Oct 2001
Perl programmer and Linux systems administration. This was my first programming-focused position. Webb Howell, the owner, is a great boss and if I had not been moving to the Netherlands, I would most likely still be working there. Journalistic Inc is the publisher of QSR Magazine.
  • Wachovia Bank
    Technical Support - Credit Operations
    Wachovia Bank Aug 1996 - Aug 1999
    Winston-Salem, Nc, Usa
Technical support for Credit Operations division. Part of a small team responsible for keeping 300 (later 500+) computers running for a banking division. Got to play with some innovative technology as well as live through the run up to the W2K bug. My roles included: - Scheduling moves and reorganizations, from 10 to 200 people shifting with their computers PLUS the coordination of ICT and physical plant and making sure that everything worked for when workers walked in the next day. I would have been good at logistics.- I was the person on the team responsible for this weird 'Internet' stuff that kept coming up. I started several projects for improved workflow and faster communications that were later passed on to committees for implementation. (everything in a bank takes a committee, which is one of the reasons I jumped ship to a smaller company later on)- I became an officer of the bank in 18 months.- The project work and other duties meant that I was routinely responsible for making recommendations (and later on, decisions) for hundreds of thousands of dollars.
  • Spss Payment Systems
    Customer Service - Prodigy
    Spss Payment Systems 1994 - 1996
    Gray, Tennessess, Usa
Phone support for the Prodigy online service. I worked my way up to second level, then to a special 3rd party software support group. IBM was just trying to come to grips with the internet then and launched a product called InfoSage. I was responsible for 'writing the book' on supporting this application, worked with the IBM representatives, and acted as a liaison to the software development group.
  • Radio Station Wqut
    On Air Announcer
Radio Station Wqut Jan 1992 - Mar 1994
    Gray, Tennessee
Hired as board operator for AM radio station and then moved over to the FM side of the station when a position opened up in the night slot (18:00 to Midnight). It was interesting work and provided me with plenty of anecdotes to tell at parties.
