My role was primarily in the development and release of corporate and registrant communications, including direct e-comms, policy and toolkits, corporate strategy development, planning and reporting. I also created and implemented the GCC 15-point EDI Action Plan, including the development of a new EDI policy; all helping the GCC to achieve the PSA EDI Standard for the first time.

I was in charge of all external communications strategy and tactics, including PR, Public Affairs, policy development, leading a team of 4 with a circa £2m budget.Successes include winning the CorpComms Best in Communications Award for a Global Food Waste report and campaign in 2013, achieving extensive global coverage, parliamentary mentions and an invite to the United Nations. I also managed high-value sponsorship of the Bloodhound Supersonic car and as a result, met the Prime Minister at Downing Street, staged events at UK parliaments to promote the value of engineering to UK PLC and exploited many other media opportunities.I developed and launched the first theme-based educational toolkit, a unique product that achieved praise for promoting engineering to the next generation, reaching over 22,000 school children over the first five years. In addition, I relaunched the highly popular Engineering Heritage Awards scheme, with over 100 awards presented, 4,500 members engaged, £4m media coverage achieved and 5 editions of the heritage book published.Altogether, I have helped develop an impressive suite of informative, high quality, theme based communications, including over 100 reports, policy statements, videos and case studies, as well as staging over 80 excellent events. £190 million in media coverage has been achieved over the last five years, including over 990 broadcast clips and 340 UK national newspaper articles – boosting the institution’s media profile immeasurably.

Starting as a Marketing and Communications Manager, I was promoted to this senior role in 2008 to focus on the development of the institution’s Public Relations and Public Affairs strategies, during its emergence as a thought leader in the engineering field.My achievements included delivering a new brand proposition, covering vision, values and ‘tone of voice’ for branding and communications material, including managing a branding agency to assist with the major project. I disseminated the new brand identity to key stakeholders that included over 100,000 members and covinced them on the merits of the new strategy.I instigated a more pro-active approach to PR and the development of policy materials and established the first political strategy, influencing and engaging with various government departments and a wide range of politicians at the highest level.Furthermore, I developed a broad range of policy reports with a new format and arranged many policy and political briefings to better target key audiences. I also devised and managed insightful research projects, including a 5 year corporate survey, as well as proposition and public perception research projects.

In this role, I focused on developing, launching and promoting various successful commercial partnerships to drive revenue for the commercial subsidiary of the institute, whilst enhancing membership benefits.A key achievement was transforming a loss-making publishing and bookshop operation, Construction Books Direct, into a profitable and sustainable online service (before the popularity of Amazon) - a very popular membership benefit.
