I am currently employed by the Cowichan Valley Regional District as a Planner IIIMy Masters Thesis, “How Local Governments Enhance Food Security: Regional and Municipal Strategies” was published in 2019. It addresses the overarching inquiry ‘what tools can local governments utilize to enhance regional food security?' The primary focus of this position is coordinating a local food map project which includes developing an online directory that identifies public and private properties available for community gardens and urban agriculture projects, and a directory of retailers, restaurants and farms selling local food from Campbell River and Vancouver Island. This project establishes some of the necessary tools that will help achieve the City’s 10% food self-sufficiency target by 2031.To help raise awareness on local food in terms of production, processing and consumption, I worked with a professional videographer to develop ‘Harvest Campbell River: Appetite for Local Food on the Rise’ a short video on community food resiliency and sustainability. This video was presented at Campbell River’s annual Earth Week Film Festival in April, 2014. This job also involves community outreach, interviews with local stakeholders, hosting focus groups, and creating communication material.I have also been an active member of the City’s Corporate Green Team. The long-term vision of the Green Team is to assist the City of Campbell River in lowering its overall environmental impact, while incorporating a triple-bottom line approach in all city initiatives. As a member of this team I will assist in the promotion of energy conservation, carbon neutral and climate action initiatives and other sustainability projects as required.
