We are a distinct financial services firm that operates within, but is divergent from, the existing economy. Wakopa Financial is cooperatively-owned by radical professionals working to create positive change in our community. We do this by providing the wrap around financial supports and mentorship for atypical entrepreneurs (youth, Indigenous, social, LGBTQ2, etc.), startups, and social enterprises that are innovating, organizing, and creating systems change for the world.Wakopa Financial Workers’ Co-operative has a distributed home office network located on Treaty #1 Territory, the original land of the Cree, Ojibway, Dene, and Dakota peoples, as well as the homeland and birthplace of the Métis Nation. The water we drink comes from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation on Treaty #3 Territory and our electricity comes from Treaty #5 Territory. We celebrate our Indigenous heritage and acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past as we work together in the spirit of truth, reconciliation, and collaboration. Our collective experience spans large cities with mature innovation scenes (New York, Toronto, Boston, Vancouver) and small cities with burgeoning innovation scenes (Victoria, Kelowna, Calgary). Comparatively, Winnipeg’s innovation scene is still very nascent and continually makes the same mistakes that these cities made along their respective journeys. We want to catapult Winnipeg ahead of the mistakes, and use the successes of these cities to advance atypical entrepreneurs, social enterprises, and startups because that is who we are, and that is who invest in!

Entrepreneur, Startup Advisor, Consultant, Board Member And Angel Investor

Current
Various Organizations Across North America

Over the years I have mentored, joined, or advised tech companies, I have participated (in part or in whole) in almost 20 different incubators, accelerators, and startup co-working spaces from Vancouver to Toronto to New York to Boston and back. Through this journey from cohort to cohort, I have met life-long friends, future business partners, mentors and investors, as well as snake-oil salespeople leeching off of the naivety of young entrepreneurs. While most programming taught similar, useful tactics to find product-market fit, I witnessed the good, the bad, and the ugly of startup life, and learned a hell of a lot along the way.Today, I use that experience and knowledge to help startups across North America, as well as consult to burgeoning incubators, accelerators, and startup spaces that want to focus on the success of their startups, social entrepreneurs, and communities. You would think this was the common goal of incubators and accelerators; however, after extensive insight and a nation-wide study, I found out that it's not! Instead, most are real estate and event planning plays more concerned about their self-promotion than the entrepreneurs they purport to serve.

Educator And Inspirer Of Social Innovation And Indigenous Social Entrepreneurship

Winnipeg, Mb, Ca

At Red River College's School of Indigenous Education, I coordinated, educated, and inspired in a brand new program which I co-developed with a group of passionate educators wanting change. By reconceptualizing education, we made an experiential, project-based, modular program, open to a wide variety of learners, and embedded with Indigenous teachings, ceremony, and ways of knowing. Students are introduced first to a multitude of for-profit, non-profit, and cooperatively structured social enterprises addressing today’s most pressing needs. After which, they work alongside industry on project-based experiences so that they have a real understanding of what it takes to tackle these environmental, social, cultural, and spiritual issues. The program culminates with the opportunity to incubate each student's or group of students' own social enterprise idea and then launch it upon graduation.
