About Richard Van De Stadt

I've been providing (technical) support ever since my career began. Starting at Philips Data Systems, at the International Sales Head Office as a contact person at the Customer Support Department for Philips' own operating system (called Octopus), distributed to all Philips Offices around the world. Then at the Computer Science Department of the University of Twente, where I worked (amongs others) as a technical assistant/software developer and workshop/conference organizer. Since September 1996 I've been providing support with CyberChair (later upgraded to CyberChairPRO), one of the first web-based submission and review systems for scientific conferences.Specialties: Providing (software) support, fast and (almost) round the clock.

  • Borbala Online Conference Services
    Owner
Borbala Online Conference Services May 2000 - Present
Provider of (software) support with a web-based submission and peer review system for (mainly Computer Science) conferences, called CyberChairPRO. While the first version of the system was built using shell scripts, it was soon rewritten in Python. It is almost continually adapted/updated based on new insights and suggestions of its (thousands of) users over the years. Due to its flexible core system, it was possible to create tailor made versions whenever requested. Hardly ever was a request for customization turned down.In addition, I maintain the Linux servers used for CyberChairPRO.

  • University Of Twente
    Software Engineer

    Enschede Area, Netherlands
I worked as a technical assistant/software developer in the research group TRESE (Twente Research on Education and Software Engineering) of the Computer Science Department, headed by Prof. Mehmet Aksit (https://www.linkedin.com/in/mehmetaksit). Since September 1996 I've been providing support with CyberChair for ECOOP (European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming). As a compensation for the time spent, my boss' project was financially compensated, while I was allowed to visit this conference to attend talks, follow tutorials and give demonstrations with my colleagues of the tools developed by TRESE, and to talk to researchers to get suggestions for the next version(s) of CyberChair. I also guided students working on their Masters theses. In addition, I (co-)organized workshops and conferences (all aspects: getting sponsors, sending out invitations, arranging travel plans and hotels for the invited speakers and creating the conference program, posters/flyers and conference proceedings).
  • Ict Automatisering
Customer Support, Beta Tester, Software Engineer At Philips Data Systems
    Ict Automatisering Aug 1988 - Sep 1990
    Apeldoorn Area, Netherlands
Being employed by ICT Automatisering, I was stationed at Philips Data Systems (officially Philips TDSN, no longer existing), where I worked at the Customer Support Department as software developer, system configurator, system administrator, and beta tester for the Philips P9000 (Unix) operating system. PDS was the International Sales Head Office, distributor of Philips' OS (called Octopus) for all Philips Offices around the globe. One of my tasks as beta-tester was to check whether new versions of the OS could be distributed (go/nogo). One of the nicer tests I remember was pulling out and putting back the power cord, to test if the system could handle that 13 times in a row without crashing. Software problems (and potential solutions) were discussed with the Software Development Department (where a couple of my former class mates worked). As part of my job as a system administrator, I developed an elegant shell script I that reduced the time to perform disk checks after system crashes, by performing the disk checks in parallel, instead of sequentially as had been done in the years before. In a production system (with 30 users waiting to get back to work after a system crash), it reduced the time to perform the disk checks of the 9 disks by almost a factor 9, so that the system was up and running after 5 minutes instead of 45.I was also responsible for the maintenance of the 'cpio' tool (copy files to and from archives).Once, while installing a new OS release in Berlin, I had to cancel the planned world-wide distribution of this release because I detected a serious bug that prevented the installation to work properly. It was quite a challenging moment and responsibility (at the age of 25) to decide that hundreds of created copies (on tape) had to be withheld from being distributed.
