By my nature I am a curious person. That curiosity took me away from my farming life and placed me on a path to a very rewarding paralegal career.Before my first assignment my Boss, an excellent litigator, told me all the attorneys involved knew the relevant law, the firm that would win… “would know the facts”. And my job was to know the facts, know the tools, know the discovery content, know the court- agency rules, the due dates, the schedules, the quirks of the case; a perfect job for the naturally inquisitive.The satisfaction of finding the answers has permeated all aspects of my professional life from the smallest personal details of a person’s life for an ICE work petition to overarching trends in an industry embroiled in multi-year civil litigation. But I still have questions.As a paralegal I’ve learned:The tools to find information; Westlaw, Lexis/Nexis, internet resources, government resources, interviewing techniques, a plethora of technologies to organize and review documents and electronic recordsThe tools to convey that information; legal rhetoric, professional interviewing techniques, data entry, exhibit creation, team consultationsThe tools to style that information; Blue Book, cite checking, Court or Agency style requirements, firm rulesThe time frame for gathering and conveying that information; rule specific due dates, case work flow tracking, factoring collaborator's time requirements, Project ManagementThe peculiarities of various types of cases; civil litigation, administrative proceedings, forms practice, transactions, enforcement, appellateTo scale my efforts to the needs of the attorney; technology provides the legal community with wonderful tools, software such as Relativity, Recommind, Summation, Concordance, Case Map, Adobe, IPRO, CaseMap etc., but when is each the right tool, what best fits the attorney’s needs Have any questions that need an answer/solution, contact me at richardwaldropcla@gmail.
