Shift still owns the rights to projects we helped develop, with distributions to the partners, and we may re-awaken it as a vehicle for more excitement when the time is ripe! -

While at Calor, I was able to play key roles in raising nearly $7 million in public funding, to assist dozens of clients in their government affairs requirements, and to successfully manage several large public projects. Because of my knack for raising public funds, I was able during this period to interact with a large number of teams creating innovative energy technology. I left Calor to start up a brokerage for environmental credits called the Carbon Advantage Program. -

I started with the built environment but also became very focused on biofuel and solar technology. During this time I did a lot of learning, attending every clean energy class, seminar and boot camp I could find, and enjoyed setting up a biofuel cooperative and other start-ups, and helping build a solar installation crew for a local company.By the end of this period, I was the Energy Lead at the Centralina Council of Goverments, a regional government entity with a membership of over a hundred municipal and county governments.. I found that my skill set of complex stakeholder relations, clearly organized written communication, and passion for advanced energy technology is an excellent combination for connecting public funding to energy projects and then administering them to successful completion. I worked with the COG on a large number of great projects through the years, especially during the rush of stimulus funding to projects throughout the region..

I had watched for years as truck after truck of lumber waste headed to the landfill. My partners and I started CSI to divert that waste stream. While a subsidiary, it was mostly scrappy startup adrenaline. We converted a 50,000 square foot sawmill into a recycling center and built the company from zero to over $1 million in revenue in 24 months---not incredible, perhaps, but considering that the product cost 15 cents each, $1 million represents a lot of recycled trellises.

As we started up and then scaled up, I found that I enjoyed the complexity of marshaling dozens of workers and millions of dollars in materials to get large projects built through the web of regulatory challenge. I have found on many occasions, when I've needed to "parachute" into a situation and quickly gather facts and contacts, whether to understand the feasibility of a project, a site, or a company, that the mental muscles I developed here and at other reporter jobs before it, has been invaluable.
