Viz-Tek is a small business that develops custom modeling, simulation, and visualization systems and software for military, commercial, and educational clients.Responsibilities included business development, business capture, and technical leadership and program management for Small Business Innovative Research and Small Business Technology Transfer efforts being performed in support of the Office of Naval Research. I was instrumental in capturing and delivering two successful ongoing programs to the military: An Automated Modeling and Simulation System to Lighten the Load of Warfighters, and An Automated Tool to Simulate the Effect of Head Borne Load during Individual Warfighter Maneuvers.

The Center for Computer-Aided Design is a $12M per year self-funded research laboratory within the College of Engineering at the University of Iowa. The laboratory focuses on digital human modeling and simulation, medical modeling and simulation, and manufacturing analysis.Working in support of the Director of the Center for Computer-Aided Design, my responsibilities included business formation to spin businesses out of the University, business development for research and development efforts, and technical direction/program management of contract efforts. I was instrumental to the capture of over $20M of contracts for the University, including major engagements with the Office of Naval Research, the US Marine Corps, and the US Army Medical Research and Material Command. I was also responsible for management of several research efforts, including the Next Generation Manufacturing Technology Initiative, an immersive 3D environment to model and simulate product and process design alternatives, and to measure and present lifecycle cost impact of design alternatives on the manufacturing process for the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

Asoyia was a startup agribusiness that commercialized highly stable, transfat free cooking oil produced from a special, identity preserved soybean developed at Iowa State University by Dr. Walt Fehr, the Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agronomy.Led all sales and marketing activities for Asoyia, beginning with the commercialization of their product in February of 2005. I managed the initial product branding effort, developed and executed product marketing plan, planned and executed company’s media relations campaign and developed a multiple channel national sales pipeline. During my two years with the company, sales increased from 7,000 pounds of oil ($4k) per month to 1.6M pounds of oil ($1M) per month.

On special assignment to the CEO of Pearson Education, I led a twelve-month recovery, redesign, and product launch for a major educational application service. Responsible for business planning, development, and oversight of all sales, marketing, software development, operations, support, and service for the launch of this product. I achieved all objectives set by Pearson’s executive management.Managed Pearson Government Solution’s engineering organization, consisting of 250 engineers distributed between eight functional departments across four sites. I participated in annual strategic planning, and served as member of the Pearson Government Solutions Leadership Team as the organization grew dramatically from $68M in revenue in 1998 to $250M in revenue in 2001. Under my direction, we achieved Level 2 rating as defined by Software Engineering Institute’s Capability Maturity Model in June 1999, and Level 3 rating in June 2001.
