"PROPS", Wednesday nights at LPR's Gallery Bar is the continuation of Rich Medina's infamous Li'l Ricky's Rib Shack parties on Wednesdays at the now defunct APT (RIP). Back at APT, Akalepse would rock the upstairs space, while Rich rocked the basement. For 8+ years NYC couldn't front...the combo was unbeatable. When it was time to move on, they chose to do it together.New venue, new name for the party, new dynamic, same viny...l junkie DJs. Rich Medina and Akalepse continue to bring you that raw, outside the Top 40, heavy, fun, sexy, soulful and honest music they are both known and respected for. The music selection weekly runs the full spectrum of soul music. Both Rich & Lepse are avid record collectors, each with a heavyweight collection of over 20,000+ records a piece, so of course you're going to hear things you don't know... that is the point. But not the whole point, they play classic tunes right next to obscurities, always pushing the listening audience a little, in a sincere effort to break new records and reintroduce slept on heaters simultaneously.PROPS is not an event sold through flashy ads, industry relations and posturing....You can keep that... Props is a music lover's paradise, designed forthose who like to groove... Everyone is welcome, but everyone should also know that we are all about pushing music forward and promoting culture. We play for the open minded and the dancers first and foremost. Rich Medina controls the room with epic 4-hour DJ sets and capitvating visuals behind him, only resting to allow live Afrobeat ensembles like Antibalas or Chico Mann take the stage with a flurry of blaring horns and hard-driving percussion that raise the volume and send the dancefloor into a frenzy.From its inception, JUMP N FUNK was designed to raise awareness of Fela Kuti and his legacy, but has since become a nightlife institution, honoring not only his incredible contribution to music, but also the causes he championed: Pan-Africanism, Black empowerment and speaking up on behalf of the fundamentally downtrodden. Armed with an unparalled love of Fela and an unrivaled collection of Afrobeat records, Rich Medina has brought JUMP N’ FUNK to cities around the world with one purpose: to spread the love of Fela and Afro-Life! Rich Medina re-creates the vibe of a Fela Kuti concert, with partner Mark Hines (The Marksmen) utilizing culturally relevant African photography and Nigerian dance videos for visuals and live percussion by Juan Carlos Izaguire and the legendary Leonard “Doc” Gibbs to accompany his turntable mixes, not to mention live performances by some of the world’s most respected Afrobeat leaders, including both of Fela’s sons, Femi and Seun Kuti. Other artists that have collaborated with Rich Medina for past JUMP N’ FUNK parties have been Zap Mama, Sandra Isadore, Akoya, Chicago Afrobeat Project, Wunmi, Ron Trent and many others.
