Power Systems And Software EngineerElectric Power Systems, Inc. Apr 2018 - Apr 2023Anchorage, Ak, UsMy work for EPS Inc. consists of a wide range of projects revolving around the power and utility industry. I primarily perform studies using various simulation software platforms to make recommendations to utilities about how to better operate their grid, control their assets, and ultimately provide more reliable and resilient electricity to their customers. A sampling of the various types of projects I have worked on includes:- Forensic analysis of blackouts and other utility issues (generation control, protection, planning, etc.)- Compliance with utility standards (e.g. NERC MOD, TPL, BAL, TOP regulations).- Building and simulating power system models in various simulation platforms (PSS/E, PSLF, PowerWorld, DigSILENT, PSCAD, EMTP, ASPEN, etc.). - Transmission and distribution interconnection studies.- Planning studies.- Creation of custom dynamic model code and transient stability analysis.- Study of control methods for various types of electricity generation.- Software design: visualization applications, network algorithms, I/O handling, data processing, and simulation automation. -
Software EngineerGe Power Nov 2015 - Apr 2018Schenectady, Ny, UsAs a GE Software Engineer, I supported the e-terraplatform energy management system (EMS) software suite which provides simulation, analysis, modeling, training, and real-time operations and controls functionality to electric utility customers around the world. This software development role required an in-depth understanding of the power system domain including: physical characteristics, emergency procedures, trending/emerging technologies, standards & governance, as well as traditional operating procedures. This position required expertise in: - Creating & Implementing complex software designs for power system simulation software. - Development of high-availability software systems needed for management of critical infrastructure. - Engineering support of new custom applications, upgrades, bug-fixes, and testing of individual customer projects following AGILE software development. - Primary development in C++, C, Proprietary code, and Fortran. Peripheral support in Python, Perl, Java, Windows Batch, and Unix BASH/CSH. - Developing customer relationships across national and international spectrum. - Creating presentation material, hands-on labs, live software demonstrations, and technical documentation. - Deliver technical training workshops internally and at customer sites. - Pursuing innovative power systems & energy ideas, and staying involved in IEEE. -
Power Systems And Software EngineerAlstom Jun 2015 - Nov 2015My work for Alstom Grid included software product development and maintenance of the e-terra product line of energy management system (EMS) software. This position required a wide range of power system domain expertise. Some key activities included: - Cross-platform code development (windows/unix) of operational power system software. - C++ development for proprietary database management and power systems algorithms. - GUI development for power system control center displays. - Creation of utility grid-operator training documentation (NERC Certified). - Bug fixes and support of prior EMS software releases.

Graduate Research AssistantOregon State University Sep 2013 - Jun 2015Corvallis, Or, UsThesis: Toward Automated Decision-Making in Power Systems Wide-Area ProtectionPrimary Research Thrusts:1. Automated Wide-Area Monitoring: was a collaborative effort between Bonneville Power Administration, Portland State University, Washington State University, and Oregon State University. Based on a machine-learning approach to identifying contingencies, cyber-attacks, and other grid security vulnerabilities through PMU data analysis. A large portion of this work included big data analysis on these synchrophasor data steams.2. Novel Wide-Area Grid Protection: algorithm is meant to prevent and mitigate cascading outages and blackouts. This project implemented an automated planning strategy for initiating Remedial Action Schemes (RASs, or Special Protection Schemes) on the transmission network. The main purpose was to develop a vertically integrated energy management system for automated, real-time power grid operation and control. This project relied heavily on power system modeling, time domain dynamic simulation, and Python/Matlab software design. Power system reliability and integration of automated decision-making tools are the two primary goals of this research. -
Undergraduate Research AssistantOregon State University Jun 2013 - Sep 2013Corvallis, Or, UsReceived an NSF REU to begin research on novel grid protection methods and cascading outages. -
Undergraduate Teaching Assistant And Peer LeaderOregon State University Sep 2010 - Jun 2013Corvallis, Or, UsAs a teaching assistant and peer leader I provided both curricular and extra-curricular support to incoming electrical and computer engineering students. I was responsible for:- Teaching 100 and 200 level electrical and computer engineering concepts.- Communicating and leading effectively in and out of the classroom.- Grading, proctoring, and leading review sessions.- Being an approachable and available resource for new college students to seek advice. -
Graduate Electrical Engineering InternSouthern California Edison (Sce) Jun 2014 - Sep 2014Rosemead, Ca, UsMy work with the Emerging Technologies and Demand Side Management group at SCE mainly consisted of evaluating new energy efficiency, demand response, household monitoring and control, and distributed energy resource technologies. This group's engineering, evaluation, and governance work directly supports customer services by moving new ideas, products, and technologies from inception to customer-side incentives. One of my major tasks was assisting with improvement of the internal technology review process. I also worked as a co-project manager exploring and evaluating new technologies with the goal of saving money via energy efficiency and reduction. Some key projects that I supported were:- New residential Zero-Net Energy (ZNE) household design.- Residential low income housing ZNE retrofits.- Residential PV monitoring and data analytics.- Placement and analysis of Residential Energy Storage Units (RESU).- SCE's involvement in the DOE – Collegiate Solar Decathlon.- IBEW Electrician training facility microgrid/energy efficiency/DSM retrofit. -
Research AssistantNational Renewable Energy Laboratory Jun 2012 - Sep 2012Golden, Co, UsAs a research assistant at NREL, I was tasked with exploring simulation techniques and developing models for two-body, point-absorbing, wave energy converters (WEC). The focus was on the power take-off subsystem of a WEC. This included simulation of mechanical and electrical systems in Simulink, as well as the controls that allow each system to function properly. A significant amount of troubleshooting, validation, technical writing, and presenting were other important aspects of the project. -
Electrical Engineering InternNaval Undersea Warfare Center - Keyport Jun 2011 - Sep 2011In two summers at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, I was tasked with multiple projects that had different levels of independence:- Underwater Sonar and Communcation Lab site survey - (Project Lead)- Virginia Class submarine technology trending analysis.- Electronic supportability studies.- Systems engineering support of in-service engineering underwater communication devices.- Electronics identification and salvage.I also had multiple opportunities to improve professional skills such as:- Communication, presentations, and public speaking at all levels of management.- Multi-team cooperation and leadership.- Technical writing and producing white papers, project reports, and updates.
