Lead mechanical engineer for Ball-s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Advanced Baseline Imager (GOES ABI) study. Performed extensive trade studies involving visible and IR subsystems including a 2-axis gimbal and scan mirror, optical instrument, detector packages, calibration systems, active and passive cryo-cooling. Instrument, valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars, designed to monitor weather from geo-synchronous orbit.* Led mechanical design effort for overall instrument; responsible for mechanical performance, mass and volume of entire system. * Managed construction of 500-part, full scale instrument mock-up to demonstrate modularity, accessibility and serviceability; mock-up also used for test planning and cost estimating* Managed SiC mirror and composite optical bench study subcontracts* Designed 2 axis scanner; built prototype and demonstrated pointing capability * Built prototype SiC scan mirror and demonstrated optical stability * Coordinated optical, thermal, structural performance modeling by control of Pro-Engineer CAD design
