Originally from Maine, Rick studied music and was a classical percussionist and rock/blues drummer until he moved to Tucson to study Architecture at the University of Arizona. Upon graduation in 1990, Rick began a 3-year appointment to the design team for the Phoenix Central Library with William Bruder Architects. His first major solo project, the Catalina House, was designed in 1993 and Rick Joy Architects (Studio Rick Joy) was established with Rick as founding/managing principal. He is the co-founder/owner of CLL Concept Lighting Lab with his wife Claudia Kappl Joy. Rick periodically serves as visiting professor at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, Rice University, M.I.T. and the University of Arizona, as well as the Immersion Vermont Masterclass. He lectures internationally and is considered an important contributor to the global discourse on conceptual and sustainable architecture.Major affiliations include The College of Fellows of The American Institute of Architects and The American Academy of Arts and Letters. Most significantly, Rick received the 2002 American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Architecture. In 2004 he won the National Design Award from the Smithsonian Institute/Cooper-Hewitt Museum. In 2015 Rick was vested into the American Institute of Architects’ College of Fellows and the Royal Institute of British Architects’ RIBA International College of Fellows. In 2019 he was inducted into the Design Hall of Fame. Studio Rick Joy realizes architectural works internationally - with extensive experience in lifestyle-based projects from numerous single-family residences to an ultra-lux resort and large-scale masterplan. SRJ also, in collaboration with two other firms, designed the famed Amangiri Resort in Utah. In 2018, the studio breathed new life into Princeton University Transit Hall and Market buildings, where it approached the brief with the desire to produce a thoughtful and orienting entry to institution. The studio’s finished work has been exhibited and published in over 150 publications worldwide and has won numerous awards. Joy's foundational principles have always been deeply informed by the spirit and sensation of creating site-specific works – the sounds and rhythms, the particular play of light and space, the relationship between shadow and light. His first book, Desert Works, explores this unique vision and practice in desert. The recently published Studio Joy Works reinforces the commitment and ability to produce immersive architectural experiences.
