  • Desktop Metal
Cofounder And Vp Of Software Development
    Desktop Metal Oct 2015 - May 2020
    Burlington, Massachusetts, Us
Upon the founding of Desktop Metal, I built the initial software team. Its role was to develop the cloud software (Fabricate) that was part of our first product, the Studio System. A three device system to print metal prototypes in an “office friendly” manner. Our software provided print preparation and process management for the devices. The software was designed to be simple and seamlessly connect the devices and process to make the Studio System a turnkey solution. The team handled all of the cloud and on-device software, except the firmware. One of the innovations was Realtime Tradeoff Analysis. Printing can be optimized by factors such as time, consumed material, cost, etc. This functionality allowed the user to optimize for one factor, say time, and see graphically and in realtime how other factors got better or worst.Another innovation was fully automated support splitting. In 3D printing, extra support material is typically printed to aid in the printing process. With metal, the supports often times require machining operations to remove. As an alternative too machining, the software identifies where the part and supports geometrically interlock. It then define seams in the supports that essentially turn it into a 3D puzzle that is then easy to remove from the part.I then led the development of Desktop Metal’s Fab Flow software. A process management system for shops who provide prototypes to engineering during their design process. A comprehensive system that handled everything from automatic price quoting and identification of printing issues, to defining shop workflows and tracking parts through those flows. My role included identifying relevant strategies, developing requirements, worked closely with UX on the design, and oversaw its development to its production release.
  • Dassault Systèmes
    Director Of Product Innovation
    Dassault Systèmes Oct 2006 - Sep 2015
    Vélizy-Villacoublay, Fr
Led the "Big Data" team which analyzed SolidWorks User Performance data. Project goal was to turn collected data in actionable insights for both internal SolidWorks use and for our end users. Major deliverables included user segmentation based on how SolidWorks is used, and tables of association rules which quantify the correlations between the commands in the software. Directed the efforts of both the internal team and hired data analysis firm.Led the conceptualization and implementation of Augmented Reality (AR) in the iOS version of eDrawings. This allows users to view CAD models in a real world context. This effort included the developed of two separate AR prototypes and then the final production implementation.Led the creation and launch of the new SolidWorks SustainabilityXpress product (www.solidworks.com/sustainability) which allows engineers to improve the environmental impact of their designs. This product uses Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to analyze the impact of SolidWorks designs. Responsible for establishing goals and strategies. This included making the complex simple, easy adoption, and a user experience that encompasses the other people the SolidWorks user works with. There is also an online calculator that makes LCA easy to appreciate by even nontechnical individuals. This is a groundbreaking product in mechanical CAD (Computer Aided Design).Performed customer research projects which included segmentation described by Personas. These were developed as a combination of qualitative and quantitative research. We contracted a 3rd party for the project, but my team and I were hands-on throughout. Worked with another 3rd party to create the “Real Insights” online advisory community. SolidWorks uses Real Insights to perform ongoing marketing and product research.
  • Cadapult3D
    Inventor & Consultant
    Cadapult3D Jun 2004 - Oct 2006
Consultant to SolidWorks Corp. (4/05-10/06): Led the SolidWorks team in a production implementation of the technology which they acquired from me. I served in the roles of Product Definition and Project Manager. Achieved our goal of delivering the technology in the SolidWorks 2007 release. The technology was released under the names FeatureXpert, FilletXpert, and DraftXpert. These became the foundation for a new product theme, SWIFT (SolidWorks Intelligent Feature Technology).Invented CAD Innovation (6/04-4/05): Today’s state-of-the-art CAD tools are very effective, but they can also be difficult to use. To address this ease of use problem, I invented a unique technology that was surprisingly easy to use while maintaining the benefits of today’s tools. I created a proof of concept prototype in C# to showcase the technology, and filed a patent for the invention. This allowed me to negotiate and eventually secure the acquisition of the IP by SolidWorks.
