My name is Rickey Smith. Currently, I work in the insurance industry. Most people are not surprised to learn that I started my career in the men’s fashion sales industry… maybe it is because of my attire; perhaps it’s because of my entrepreneurial spirit. Working in the insurance industry came later in my career after I learned from a mentor about the fast-paced and abundant opportunities. I spent more than 5 years in retail, learning all about sales and marketing from some of the best in the field. Using the knowledge I acquired and my entrepreneurial spirit, I later offered freelance fashion consulting to clients, helping them organize their wardrobes and develop their unique style. I transitioned from retail sales and consulting into local government, working as a Legislative Aide, involved directly in community engagement and outreach, as well as assisting with legislative matters. It was the appeal of helping people at their most significant time of need that first interested me in the insurance industry. Licensed to practice insurance in all 50 states, the experience in insurance has allowed me the opportunity to travel around the country and meet some outstanding people along the journey. Holding a Master’s Degree in Business Communication with a concentration on organizational development from Spalding University, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a minor in African American Studies and a certificate in Conflict Resolution from the University of Louisville, you can say, I have always had a thirst for knowledge.
