About Rick Gage

There is just too much suffering in the workplace. It takes a massive toll on employees and their families. And the cost of lost opportunities for organizations is huge.AND there is tremendous upside for organizations that pay attention to workplace culture. I’m continually amazed at how much high-performance teams can accomplish. For more than a decade now, Compassion & Mindfulness @ Work have been my professional passions.Lately, I’ve been holding the question “what is the invitation of these times?” The answer that has emerged for me is “Connectedness” – a deep sense of belonging in community, and an inward journey of healing and integration. The foundation is the inner work of becoming more aware and accepting about all the parts of me. Leaning into life as my teacher and growth as my birthright. Holding all my experiences with as much curiosity as I can. Remembering that I am not alone, separate, broken, or defective. I am human, like everyone else. And that’s enough.I believe we are wired as humans to live in community. It is not only more efficient, as we share resources, it can provide the emotional and practical support that is a vital antidote to the stress we feel when we try to go it alone.Connectedness is the consciousness that we need to heal the planet. I’m convinced that we can’t solve wars, racism, climate change or any of the other major challenges our world is facing from the same mindsets and behaviors that created them.We need to break through to a fundamentally different way of seeing ourselves and the world around us. My pursuit of these passions drives what I do in my work and beyond. My career has afforded me the privilege to work alongside amazing people for some of the largest, most prestigious global companies. My clients have included a long list of visible, distinctive companies that have changed the landscape of their industries.I climbed the corporate ladder to Vice President with responsibility for 750 people in 50 countries. I was a driven, classic workaholic. And like many others, I reached a point where my achievements were no longer rewarding. There had to be something more. So, I took a leap into the unknown with a couple extended sabbaticals. In the months away from work I explored how I could live and work differently. My sabbatical journeys led me back to what looks - on the surface - like a traditional career, but under the surface, “work” is completely different for me now.Exploring connectedness brings me joy.Sharing my journey and learning about yours is so much fun. Let’s talk.

  • Atos
Vice President - Global Client Executive
    Atos 2017 - 2019
    95877 Bezons, Fr
I was honored to lead the Atos global team supporting Microsoft and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. My time with Atos brought into sharp focus the elements of a positive work culture that I am so passionate about. Both Microsoft and the Foundation are great clients on both a business and personal level. The Atos team I led was the same group I had the pleasure of working with in 2004-2008 when it was part of Siemens. Atos acquired Siemens IT Solutions and Services in 2011. Atos is headquartered in France and has nearly 100,000 employees in 72 countries. I enjoyed the opportunity to visit Paris for global meetings.
  • Strong-Bridge Consulting
    Managing Director
    Strong-Bridge Consulting 2012 - 2016
    Bellevue, Washington, Us
My time at Strong-Bridge Consulting was a great experience for me. After working primarily in very large companies, it was very refreshing to be part of growing, mid-sized firm. During my time at Strong Bridge we almost doubled in size. As a part of the core leadership team I was energized as we tackled the challenges of managing through that growth. We made some big shifts in the four and a half years I was with the firm. We did some things really well and we made some mistakes along the way. Over all, I have to say, I’ve never seen or been a part of an organization so admired by employees and clients alike. One of my accomplishments at Strong Bridge about which I feel a great deal of pride was a Personal Branding program I initiated. Over a two-year period, I was honored to work with more than 50 consultants and clients to help them gain a much clearer understanding of the unique, differentiated value they provide. It has been so rewarding to support people as they unleash the awesome capabilities they already have inside them. I know this is work I will continue to do in some form for the rest of my life.At Strong Bridge I continued my 12+ years serving Microsoft clients. In that time, I have been privileged to work with many amazing people across the Microsoft global organization. They are relationships that will last much longer than any specific contract or engagement. Clients and contacts have become friends and I naturally want to help them in any way I can. Those connections have made my work life a much richer experience. What I loved most about Strong Bridge was our values. For example, that we always thought long term and approached each situation with a good karma business principle – first do the right thing, whether it aligns to our short term self-interest or not. I am so grateful for the outstanding people I got to work with every day as colleagues, clients and friends.
  • Wipro Technologies
    Strategic Relationship Executive
    Wipro Technologies 2009 - 2011
    Bangalore, Karnataka, In
Working at Wipro with Microsoft as my client was a great experience for me. I loved my trips to India and working with colleagues whose life path and social context were quite different from mine. My world was enriched as my insatiable curiosity dug deeply into understanding how to bring divergent cultures together in productive teams to deliver top notch services across time zones with very little opportunity to collaborate in person. I learned greater finesse and adaptability in my mentorship and leadership development.I have deep admiration for my south Asian colleagues. For example, I know that someone who learns to drive well in the crowded streets of most cities in India is a better driver than I will ever be. I pay attention to the other cars on the road – they have learned to instinctually pay attention to all people on the road – drivers, passengers and pedestrians. If I work hard I can sustain that level of awareness for a few minutes at best.
  • Siemens
    Vice President
    Siemens 2004 - 2008
    Munich, De
What a privilege it was to lead a global team of 750+ people in 50 different countries. It was great to experience “global” first hand. My life was enriched by travel and interaction with such a wonderful variety of cultures. Our team served Microsoft globally so getting to know both of these potent global companies and how they show up in different parts of the world was a playground for my passion to understand people, organizations and what makes them tick.I loved the insights and understanding that came from work and personal interaction with colleagues from around the world. I learned, for example that labor law in Europe focuses on standards for treating workers well, while labor law in the U.S. focuses on treating workers equally – sometimes equally badly. The diligent, thorough way my German colleagues approached their business challenges was refreshing for me. The long term value of first getting the process right and then working to improve the output was a quite different mindset than I’d experienced in the fast paced, get results this quarter driven U.S. high tech companies.Dublin and Munich became homes away from home for me. I enjoyed them each through the seasons over the course of several years. Both are wonderful, vibrant cities which I enjoyed as a pedestrian without ever driving a car. Spending my adult life in the western U.S. - living without a car was something for which my mind had no frame of reference.
  • Hitachi Consulting
Practice Lead - West Region Enterprise Applications
    Hitachi Consulting 2003 - 2004
    Santa Clara, California, Us
I joined Hitachi because I had worked closely with several members of the Seattle leadership team while I was with Oracle Consulting as we jointly served World Vision as our client. I loved the values and teamwork I found in the tight-knit team that had left Anderson Consulting to join Hitachi a couple years prior. The opportunity to learn about Enterprise Applications beyond Oracle and several interesting industries in greater depth, such as Biotech was really valuable for me. While our day to day work context was not that different from my previous experience with U.S. based companies, strategic decisions brought with them an exposure to the Japanese way of doing business which was well outside of my previous experience. I loved the chance to stretch my mind to try to understand the way that my colleagues from Japan engaged in a much more subtly disciplined, hierarchical decision process. And as always, the best part of my work was the outstanding people I was privileged to work alongside as we developed and expanded the Enterprise Applications practice in the western U.S.
  • Oracle Consulting
    Senior Director And Practice Lead
    Oracle Consulting 1997 - 2003
    Austin, Texas, Us
My work at Oracle was divided into two major phases. The first was in the San Francisco Bay Area where it was my privilege to lead the very first internet and electronic commerce practice for Oracle Consulting. Those were the heady very early days of the internet explosion starting in 1997. And the Bay Area was one of the primary epicenters of the earthquake-like shift that has transformed the way all of us interact and do business today. This was the genius of the U.S. business culture at its best. And I was in such a great position to watch it all because Oracle was one of the foundation technologies used by nearly every internet “start-up” including Google, Yahoo, Intuit and a host of others, many of whom have come and gone. And Oracle Consulting was the part of Oracle that went native into our clients businesses to help them leverage our technology. My team included some of the smartest people I’ve ever known, each of them recognized technical architects and experts in their fields. I had many moments of wondering how on earth I could be so lucky as to have the opportunity to lead such an amazing team. I can remember one of these beautiful minds sitting in my office and asking quite bluntly, “what could you possibly do for me that would matter to me in the least”. We came to an understanding a formed a friendship that lasted for years. The second phase of my work at Oracle was as the business development lead for the Consulting practice that covered the western U.S. outside of California. In that role my practice expanded to include extensive work with implementation of Oracle Enterprise Applications. Having team members in major cities from Denver westward, gave me a chance to visit and enjoy many parts of the country I really enjoy. Learning to come into a situation, understand it quickly and find a way to add value from the start was my growing edge. It was a blast.
  • Electronic Data Systems
    Client Services Director
    Electronic Data Systems 1995 - 1997
    West Hartford, Us
At EDS I had the opportunity for focus on a single client, McCaw / AT&T Wireless. I loved being able to dig in deeply to understand their challenges and find broad solutions to my client’s needs including full outsourcing of major functions of the business.I loved the chance to innovate and develop solutions outside of the box. For example we developed a browser based solution (before most of the world had ever heard of such a thing) which allowed call center agents to access information on disparate systems which had previously required three separate devices on their desktop.
  • Catalyst Business Solutions
    Co-Founder
    Catalyst Business Solutions 1993 - 1995
As a co-founder of Catalyst, I had the opportunity to build a company from the ground up. We developed workflow solutions for clients in the government and private industry. I learned that I make a horrible CFO and that I have a gift for inspiring confidence in clients who were willing to take a leap of faith on our little <10 person company to develop key systems for them.
  • Digital Equipment Corporation (Dec)
    Consulting Director
    Digital Equipment Corporation (Dec) 1985 - 1993
While many today may not even know Digital or DEC existed, it was one of the most innovative companies of its time. A pioneer in the mini-computer industry we were the David to IBM’s Goliath. And it was such a potent, powerful team of professionals. Many of us were refugees from AT&T which had developed an incredible field organization but didn’t have the products to back it up. Digital was the opposite. Terrific products but an engineering culture that had believed for a long time good products sell themselves. There are still occasional gatherings of Seattle based ex-DEC employees. That’s a testimony to the great team we had and the way most of us remember one of our best work experiences. Ken Olsen was one of the most loved and inspiring leaders of a fortune 100 company in the last hundred years. I’m proud to have been a part of that chapter of the high tech industry.
  • At&T
    Account Executive
    At&T 1981 - 1984
    Dallas, Tx, Us
My career started at AT&T just before the divestiture that broke up the “Bell System”. I was part of a massive wave of people hired into a multi-year training program that taught solutions sales / service. AT&T made a level of investment in all of us that is incomprehensible to anyone who wasn’t working before 1980. A thousand person team was pared down again and again to a super high powered 10% of us that were launched into AT&T’s first unregulated field sales and service organization. It was one of the most amazing collections of talent ever assembled. We did remarkable things even though we had almost no product to sell beyond basic telephone equipment.I was so fortunate to start my career with that training foundation and peer performance excellence.
