In addition, Rick was also a major contributor (film editor) to three Emmy award-winning documentaries, and as a result, was offered a scholarship into the renowned American Film Institute.Rick was then hired on as the co-head of PBS’s film department for News and Public Affairs and to teach news film production and editing for the Student News program.

At the ripe ol’ age of twelve, he opened "Tricky Ricky's Magic Shop" in Fisherman’s Village after convincing its management that they should give him free retail space because magic was such a tremendous draw to their local tourist attraction.

As a young filmmaker, Rick was admitted into Los Angeles City School’s prestigious E.S.P. (Exploring Sensory Perception) Media Lab at fourteen years old. It was the first time a class of this kind was ever offered in the USA and Rick was featured on NBC News and acknowledged for his exceptional film creativity. He capitalized on his E.S.P. experience by presenting seminars for L.A. City Teachers advising them on how to utilize film and multi-media in the classroom as a way to enhance the educational experience.
