    Rick was a founding partner of Sequel Venture Partners, a Rocky Mountain based venture capital firm specializing in early-stage funding for emerging technology firms. The firm manages more than $410 million in capital with investments focusing on information technology, telecommunication, biotechnology and life sciences. Rick was instrumental in the formation and execution of Sequel’s information technology and internet strategy. In addition, he focused the firm’s community efforts on ensuring Sequel’s exceptional reputation as a nationally recognized top tier investment firm. Rick established himself as a ‘go to’ resource for the companies and boards with which he was involved. He is tough when needed, but a trusted and fair advisor due to his strong operational background and venture experience.Rick invested in and built numerous successful Internet and software companies. Some examples include MatchLogic (acquired by Excite), Dante (acquired by WebMethods), Service Magic (acquired by IAC, renamed to HomeAdvisor), Bid4Vacations (acquired by I.C.E.) and BlueCurve (acquired by Red Hat Inc.). During his venture capital tenure, he invested 10’s of millions of dollars in over 14 portfolio companies which returned very high IRR results for all limited partners. He served on all of those companies board of directors. Rick also invested personally in many other early stage seed projects.

    Rick was responsible for setting up the legal organizational structure of the Association, including the operating agreement which defined specific responsibilities for each board member. The charter of the Association was to make a bigger impact on the growth of early stage businesses and investment opportunities in the region by working closer with Universities, state and local governments, professional service providers, large public and private firms as well as national venture and PE firms. Rick solicited regional VC firms to join the board with this intent.The Association expanded its scope and mission a few years later to include neighboring states and renamed itself the Rocky Mountain Venture Capital Association to recognize its growth to a larger region.One of the main initiatives included the organization and management of conferences that brought promising early-stage companies together with local and national Venture Capital firms.

    Rick reported to the SVP of Strategic Planning who reported to the Founder of Sybase, Bob Epstein. In addition to helping with the MDI acquisition (see previous position) and integration, Rick was asked to evaluate various initiatives throughout the entire organization. While the internet was beginning its growth to mainstream usage, Sybase was considered the fastest growing technology company in the world at that point. Rick traveled around the world representing Sybase's strategic plan to customers, prospects and partners.

    Rick was a founding member of this enterprise software company which allowed applications on PC’s to easily access information already managed and stored on corporate systems and databases. Rick directed and developed software products that are still considered the best in their class today, and which led to the birth of Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) industry segment. One of the first products Rick developed was licensed directly to Bill Gates and resulted in a relationship that blossomed into a 10 year strategic marketing partnership with Microsoft. Rick served as President from 1990-1993 until the company was acquired by Sybase Inc. in early 1994 where he then served as Vice President of Strategic Relationships at Sybase until founding Sequel Venture Partners.
