Dr. Shang is a research staff member of policy research office (deputy director level) at China Datang Corporation, serving for the corporate board of directors' office and C.P.C. party office. His primary role focuses on research of emerging technology on power industry and state-owned enterprise reform for operation and management. Prior to joining China DaTang, Rick had been working as managing consultant and data scientist for Center of Competence for Energy & Utility industry at IBM US. He lead several analytics projects, including Watson AI application, big data and predictive analytics for several utility companies (Oncor, DTE, Enercon, etc.) across the globe. Dr. Shang received his doctoral degree from department of Technology and Society (under the school of applied engineering) at SUNY Stony Brook University in May 2015. The Ph.D. major is Technology, Policy and Innovation, which is an interdisciplinary program of engineering/technology, economics and public policy. He also received his B.S. degree in Computer Science from Peking University, China.During the Ph.D. years, Rick's primary research focuses on the assessment of distributed energy resources (DER) technology and the integration of DERs into the emerging distribution power paradigms. Two research studies in Rick's doctoral research include but not limited to: 1) assessing the arbitrage value of plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in smart grid, and 2) pricing emergency services of dynamic microgrid as a measure increasing distribution resilience.Dr. Shang also has internship experience in IBM T.J. Watson Research center, where he completed several projects including agent-based simulation of smart meters on demand response impacts, and dynamic thermal model of indoor distribution transformer station.
