Life in the finance industry has been quite an experience for me over my 28-year career. I’ve worked with great companies and met some wonderful people along the way. It’s been fruitful in many ways, but there were also periods where things got very difficult. In 1989, I started in the mortgage business as an Assistant Manager in Columbia, SC. In 1992, I was promoted to a Branch Manager in a newly developed market in Greenville, SC. That branch was very successful for many years and life was Good. In 1998 I was approached by another company and after several offers, I decided to join their team to take on a role as Regional Manager. It was successful in the beginning but after 1 year into the job, the company closed. The words from my previous Regional Manager echoed, “The grass is not always greener on the other side.” He had asked me not to leave but thankfully he did rehire me for the role that I left 2 years prior. Fast forward to 2008, the mortgage industry took a nosedive and I found myself unemployed. I worked full time and part time jobs in different industries but found myself making a sizeable amount less than I was previously making. This resulted in a financial strain. I experienced my first and only auto repossession, lost an investment property and almost lost my home. Bill collectors called night and day. I depleted a healthy savings and retirement account. (In hindsight, I should have sought legal advice on how to protect those accounts.) My great credit got bad. Despite all those struggles, with being strong in my faith, continued prayers and with God’s grace, I never once felt a need to say “the hell with it” and give up. I still had enough fire in me to fight back and I did what was needed to provide for my family. This was a humbling experience for me. That period was challenging, but I learned a lot. I became stronger and, in many ways, wiser. So today, I have a better appreciation for life, loved ones, and the reason that I am here. By the way, my credit is better than it has ever been.So, I'm a testament to the fact that bad things happen to good people. This is one of the reasons why I have an appreciation and understanding of the need for the subprime financing industry. This industry can help consumers emerge and recover out of those bad situations, if things are done correctly and consumers are treated fairly. I've worked with ACA for over 9yrs and this is a company that really understand the need to provide financing for consumers with less than perfect credit.
