My remit was to turn the seeds of a few promising products, and a tiny team, into a sustainable, fast-growing business. We ended up rebuilding our flagship product from the ground up, shuttered the other two products (three including the one I shut down to join Shorthand), and rebuilt the team.It worked. But we had a lot of luck, and help from people who believed in us, too.Today we’re proud to say that we can count some of the largest and most iconic brands and news orgs on the planet as happy customers. Composure was a Startmate 2014 company. Sentence and paragraph completion for Gmail using natural language processing. Later evolved to bring you related documents, contacts and events as you typed, eliminating the need to search for these things separately.I joined Mitchell Quille and Daniel Tse as a cofounder at Composure at Startmate 2014.

I work with the Lab Director, Commercialisation Manager and the research Project Leaders in NICTA's Queensland Research Laboratory to define and manage basic research projects that aim to have commercial impact. Collaborative systems was an area of focus. I am also tasked with creating links into Brisbane's growing startup community.During my time at NICTA, I've become proficient at architecting and engineering Ruby on Rails-based stacks of various flavours to fit a number of different use cases. This has meant learning, among other things, MongoDB, Solr, RabbitMQ/AMQP, vanilla Rails, Cramp, RSpec, ember.js and a bunch of other fun stuff.

Researcher in the fields of ubiquitous, mobile and collaborative computing, specialising in context-aware computing. I also led the development of NICTA's strategy in the Safety & Security business area for 18 months, and founded citemine.com, a novel market-based service for the early identification of high impact academic publications and the attribution of reputation to academics who write them (see linked document below for details).

The DSTC was kind enough to provide me with a fantastic working environment and some financial support for my Honours year and my Ph.D. During my Honours year, I worked in the m3 project group (pervasive computing) and also did a half-year project in the Elvin group (a kick-butt content-based routing protocol, which spun out of the DSTC as Mantara). During my Ph.D. I was affiliated with the PACE group, which developed a state-of-the-art platform for ubiquitous computing.

As an intern at Sun Microsystems Research Labs, I helped to develop a prototype of the Multitasking Virtual Machine for Java. This virtual machine was capable of executing multiple isolated Java applications in a single virtual machine, thereby reducing startup overhead for all but the first application.
