Owner
CurrentAfter taking a six-month sabbatical, I created LegUp Ventures to serve as a holding company for my entrepreneurial ventures and executive consulting. LegUp Ventures is 100 percent self-funded, and we have no plans to raise outside capital. To date, we’ve launched the following ventures:- LegUp Health (active)- GroupCurrent (closed)And we’ve consulted with several venture-backed companies including Voxpopme, Windfall Data, and Tachyon.
Co-Founder
GroupCurrent provided outsourced management to member-based groups such as nonprofits, communities, and associations. We created the business around our first client, PandoLabs (now just "Pando"). For a full year, my co-founder and I managed Pando's entire operation and reported to the Board. We converted it to a member-based community and installed a new self-sustaining revenue model. Pando is now Park City’s entrepreneurial community. We decided to shut down GroupCurrent so we could focus on other ventures.
Ceo
Facing significant regulatory uncertainty stemming from the Affordable Care Act, we raised ~$3M in venture capital to fund new product development while we lobbied for regulatory clarity. In December 2016, President Obama signed the bipartisan Small Business Healthcare Relief Act into law which created a safe harbor for small businesses to reimburse employees for their own health insurance tax-free called the QSEHRA. Over the following 18 months, we pivoted the business model and rolled out a new platform to deliver the new QSEHRA solution. During this time, we rebranded Zane Benefits to PeopleKeep, rebuilt the sales and marketing motions to support self-service and the new product, and returned to generating positive cash flows. When I stepped down as CEO, I left PeopleKeep generating millions in annual recurring revenue, profitable, cash flowing, and with regulatory tailwinds at its back for the first time in its ten-year history.
President And Various Roles
After the 2008 market crash, the board laid off the entire executive team along with most of the workforce. As one of five remaining team members and with a few months cash runway, I led the pivot to a new reseller distribution model and refocused the business on the microbusiness health benefits market. From 2009 to 2015, I acted as CEO and led the bootstrapping of the new business to several million dollars in annual recurring revenue by pioneering a new health benefit model through which companies reimbursed employees tax-free for their own health insurance.During this time, the company faced substantial regulatory headwinds. To help educate regulators and market influencers, I co-authored "The End of Employer-Provided Health Insurance" which was published by Wiley in November 2014 and led to numerous national media opportunities.
Sales Rep
After moving to Park City to become a ski bum in the summer of 2007, I was recruited to join Zane Benefits as its thirteenth employee and third sales rep.
