As both an active member, and as President of the NHSF Nottingham Trent Hindu Society over the last couple of years, I was able to expand my social circle, meeting a wide range of students from different backgrounds, and attend/host events that brought everyone together for a united purpose. Our Society consistently ran events throughout the year, including sports events, with local and international tournaments, religious events, including weekly prayers, and social events, ranging from our flagship dinner and dance event, Shyaam, to bowling/ice skating/dinner socials that were attended and enjoyed by our members. Leading a Committee and Sub Committee of 13 members, we were successful in achieving our aims of retaining and improving membership numbers, hosting a wider range of events with a higher turnout, and ensuring that our Society acted as an open forum that educated and inspired members from all backgrounds. In addition to this, I was also proud to accept a National award on behalf of the society, and also to be nominated and shortlisted for 2 awards from our Student's Union (more information below).In addition to this, we focused on the theme of Sewa (selfless service), or commonly interpreted as charity work, throughout the year. We held a range of events in our Sewa Week 2013, including bucket collecting, leg waxing, sponge throwing, helping clean at local parks, and our main charity event, the Boys vs. Girls Showdown 2013! Throughout the year, we raised over £1000 for charity!
